FDA APPROVES ALCON'S CATARACT DEVICE

The FDA recently announced approval of a lens to improve cataract patients' vision. The agency will allow Alcon to use its AcrySof Toric intraocular lens (IOL) for cataract patients with pre-existing corneal astigmatism. The company is planning a commercial launch of the product in conjunction with the annual meeting of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in March 2006.
"Approval of the AcrySof Toric IOL is an important addition to our AcrySof IOL product portfolio and further demonstrates our commitment to helping cataract surgeons achieve the best possible outcomes for their patients," said Robert Stevens, Alcon's vice president of research and development.
