Army application: Are my eyes good enough?

    Greetings,

I've been searching the internet trying to convert sph to snellen measurements. Basically I looked at my optician's last report and it says I'm -4.75 sph in the left eye and -5.25 sph in the right eye.

To get into the Irish army, you've got to be, quote 'not less than 6/18 in both eyes'.

    Are my eyes good enough?

    Insight anyone?

    Many thanks...

Why not just go to someone who has an eye chart and see what you can see without glasses? Acuity can vary amoung individuals with the same precription.

Eh, well I thought someone could give me a quick conversion. Not everyone has an eye chart in their office.

I fear I'm way off the mark for 6/18 with my -4.75 and -5.25 eyes.

A conversion within some tolerance would be great...

Go down to your local recruiting station and talk to the nice young man wearing the forest green uniform. He will answer your question. If the Army is anything like my Marine Corps the recruiter will have a Snellen chart and can tell you if you are a pass or fail.

I think your eyes could be worst than 6/60 according to your prescription.

The best bet for you is to ask your optometrist.

Is the requirement 6/18 unaided vision or with correction ? Your unaided vision (without glasses) and not squinting to cheat with a -4.75sph and a -5.25sph is approximately 6/105 or 20/500 in snellen equivalent. The big E on the eye chart is 20/400 or 6/120. So if this is the unaided requirement no go.You are what we call a high myope. If your correction is down to 6/6 the unaided vision is just academic. The military everywhere has plenty of opportunities for tech and support staff and a better chance of staying alive. Good luck.

Why do you want to give up your lucrative career as a pop artist for the army?
