Carl Zeiss Vision Acquires Optical Plastics

Carl Zeiss Vision (CZV) has announced the purchase of Optical Plastics, a full-service wholesale optical laboratory in Clackamas, Oregon.

Commenting on the acquisition, Darrell Zoromski, CZV’s Vice President, Rx and Partner Labs, said “Optical Plastics gives us an excellent platform for category growth in the Northwest. Our experience in other markets shows that having a Carl Zeiss Vision laboratory in a region drives demand for premium CZV products like ZEISS Gradal, SOLAOne™ and Teflon® Clear Coat Lenses. We believe that we now have the capability to grow the whole market.” Optical Plastics occupies the same building as SOLA Custom Coatings, which “creates an obvious synergy,” Zoromski said.

Founded in 1974 by Ronald Syth and Bob Hagen, Optical Plastics was originally located in Portland, moving to Clackamas in 1989. The lab handles all ophthalmic lens styles and materials, and receives orders for specialty work from all around the country. In 2004, Optical Plastics became the first laboratory to be honored with the prestigious VSP People First Lab of the Year Award.

Hagen, who continues as President of Optical Plastics, said that there was no intention to change the lab’s staff or business practices. “We don’t want to change what has made us successful. Our customers appreciate the way we do business. But we’re very pleased to be able to offer the full range of Carl Zeiss Vision products and services.”
