    Exclamation Aid to Katrina Victims

Lewis Telethon to Aid Katrina Victims
    http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=stor..._jerry_lewis_2
The actor-comedian announced this week that he's splitting the telethon's attention between the Muscular Dystrophy Association's needs and those of victims of hurricane Katrina and is asking donors to divide their compassion.
"If you want to send me 20 bucks for my kids, send 10. Send the other 10 to these people in this trouble. The disaster is literally that and it has to be addressed," the actor-comedian told a news conference.
Rotarians mobilize to aid Hurricane Katrina victims
    http://www.rotary.org/newsroom/progr...1_katrina.html
Rotary zones 29 and 30 have established the Katrina Relief Fund, a donor advised fund (DAF) with The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, to help streamline the flow of contributions from Rotarians looking to assist victims of the hurricane disaster in the southern United States.
Checks should be earmarked for "Katrina Relief Fund" (in the MEMO line) and made payable to "TRF DAF". All checks should be addressed and mailed to:
    Mr. Clint McGowan, TRF DAF

You can donate to the Red Cross thru your Amazon.com account. Ask your church what to d0--my church is organizing donations of clothing, toys, etc to send to Catholic Charities who will forward the stuff to churches in affected areas. My sister in Alabama has volunteered to take in a family.

Pray for the victims and that the fabulous city of New Orleans can come back and remember this horrible situation next time there is a boring article in your local paper about the need to invest in infrastructure--it's not sexy, but boy is it needed!!!

Two of my favorites ... NW Medical Teams & Salvation Army

    Northwest Medical Teams:

    www.nwmedicalteams.org

    What we are doing

Helping local church-based groups provide lodging and food for refugees.

    Shipping emergency health supplies.

Dispatching mobile health vans to address public health needs.

Sending staff and volunteers to help medical relief efforts.

    What you can do

    Donate cash.

$100 will feed a family displaced by the hurricane for a week.

$100 will provide basic personal health supplies to 50 displaced people.

$140 will transport 200 blankets to people in temporary shelters.

    Donate medical supplies. Call 800.959.HEAL

Pray for those affected and those responding to this disaster.

96% of donations go directly to help people in need

One of Forbes Magazines "Gold Star" charities

    Salvation Army

    1. Financial Donations:

Financial contributions are greatly needed, and provide The Salvation Army with the funds to purchase what storm victims need. They also allow The Salvation Army to assess the unique needs of individuals and families, as well as put money back into the economy of those communities affected by the disaster.

To donate by phone, call 1-800-SAL-ARMY.

    http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/usn/www_usn.nsf >

To donate by mail, send checks, earmarked 'disaster relief,' to: The Salvation Army Hurricane Relief Fund PO Box 4857 Jackson, MS 39296-4857

Visit your local Wal-Mart or Sam's Club to donate to The Salvation Army's Hurricane Katrina relief effort.

    2. In - Kind Donations (physical items):

Due to the uncertainty of specific needs and a desire for The Salvation Army to meet as many of those needs as possible, we are not able to accept in kind donations at this time. Please continue to donate clothing, bric-a-brac and furniture to your local Salvation Army in support of their ongoing programs in your community. Corporations wishing to make in kind donations may contact 1-888-363-2769.

    3. Volunteers:

    > Click here to fill out a Salvation Army volunteer form. Please do not come to the sites directly to volunteer. You will be contacted as the need arises both in the directly affected states and in the surrounding states sheltering refugees. Thank you.

    4. Prayer:

    > Please pray for the victims of Hurricane Katrina and for the rescue and response workers as they all begin to weed through the destruction.

Jacqui, Who is down there now, said that in New Orleans underclothing is the most needed. The Salvation Army seems to be the ones needing the money the most. Other areas seem to be different.

Phoenix has now started receiving evacuees at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum. See AZ 2-1-1 Online for more info on how AZ residents can help.

I just had to post this. I was pretty hard on Harry Coonick Jr. for what I percieved has self endorsement, but it wasn't. I just watched him carry out an old man from THE BIG EASY and bring him to safety. That does it for me Harry I will never question your motives again what you did was heroic, going into chemically contaminated water and trying to rescue people. I publically apologize to Harry for as hard as I was on Him he did not deserve it.

We are definitely seeing an influx of victims here in Dallas- in fact, a few were at the church Debbie and I visited last week. A lot of people are beginning to "adopt" families and take them into their homes. Frankly, whatever else may be learned from this disaster, it is great to see the kindness and generosity of people when tragedy strikes.

Does anyone know of a link to an organization that matches host families with displaced families? We have an extra room, and would like to provide someone with a place to stay until New Orleans can be- well- rebuilt. To be perfectly honest, however, I travel a lot and would be more comfortable taking in a mother and children than a couple guys (I don't want to be prudish or selfish, but I just don't want to leave the wife and kids alone with gentlemen we don't know).

I don't know of a link to reunite families, but here's one if you want to help by taking in one or more of the victims:

You can also help by giving a Ben Franklin or what ever you can give to the Salvation Army or what ever organization you like. I like the Salvation Army
and Guarding Angel. These people will need money for quite awhile. I like the generosity of one of the casinos. Casinos always seem to get a bad rap but this one said as long as our workers are of work we will continue to give them a paycheck even if it takes nine months, now there is a company stepping up to the plate. ;)

    Thanks

For all of you that have been and will be so generous and fast with your support, and even those that have backed off in criticism of the relief effort, you have my and I hope the entire state of Mississippi's thanks.
This is putting me on such a guilt trip, we may even have to concider forgiving the War of Northern Agression.

Yankees and others can be so nice when they are not down here to take something away.

NOOOOOOOOOO. You have to keep the WONA stuff going on--it's your essence!!! PS when anyone is thinking of how much $$$ to donate, keep in mind it's tax deductible and they send you a receipt for anything over $250.

Chip, here's one Yankee (actually former Canadian) that's on your side. I just got back from New Orleans and had a chance to do a fly over of Biloxi-Gulfport and Pass Christian. All I can say is MY GOD !!!!. As soon as I recover from volunteering I'll make a financial contribution.

P.S. I'm already thinking about going back down for another tour.

I'd also like to remind people that their employeers or their spouses employeers may be matching donations (for example my company is matching 100% of our donations to the American Red Cross). This is a great way to make your dollars go further and work harder.

In a small company ask the management in a large company talk to human resources. Even if they don't you may plant the seed in their mind.
