    occluder lens material??

Anyone know of an occluder stock lens I can get to edge down for my patient's frames? I have sold millions of the clip-on type occluders but I have a particular ( or peculiar, how ever you look at it ) patient that wants a lens mounted into his frame. I have tried tinting a plano lens to the point of welding mask darkness but light still transmits. I have tried occlusion foils but he wants it black. Where can I find true occlusion material to edge down into frame shapes?

    Thanks!!!

Would an occluder contact lens work in this situation?

Yes it would but I can't get him to wear one. Tried that too.

Black Contac adhesive paper, applied to back of lens? One of my docs uses frosted type contac as an occluder for an MS patient, which works fine for her!:)

How about a standard occluded lens with a pewter mirror on the front?

3M makes a rubber insulation that is used by electricians. It comes in sheets, is about 0.5mm thick and has adhesive on one side. Easily cut with scissors it will conform to the ocular surface of any radius without wrinkling.

Check with an electrician or stop into any electrical wholesaler.

Thank you for the ideas. I actually put electrical tape on his lens like I have several other patients in the past. I was just hoping there was an occluded lens blank out there that could be edged down. NEW PRODUCT/BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY? Painting seems like a good idea. I may try that.
    Thanks again~!

We have had to paint a lens black and also attach a painted side shield for a few patients. I often have the lab not polish the back side (frost) before applying. You can also use camoflauge markers on the bevel.

Get a CR39 lens..............edge it down to frame shape. Dye the lens a full black with Micro-Tints. Will take about 120 seconds and your done.

This patient has 20/400 vision with best correction, double vision and photophobic. His vision being so poor and light sensative, the best solution (the one he is most comfortable with) is occlusion. He refuses to wear a contact lens.

    Can I offer another suggestion?

If he is amblyopic with double vision why not put some prisms on him so images are far apart to make him ignore the blurry image. Or is he legally blind (20/200 or worse in the better seeing eye)? In that case- give him prisms to give him single vision. I’ve tried these scenarios with my patients with similar problems (with the help of MD, of course) and it seems to work fine. And more appealing cosmetically. Slight tint would ease photophobia especially if Fresnel press-on prisms are used.

I frost the rear of the lens with very fine wet and dry, and then spray with matt black aresoll paint - 2-3 light coats, nice and easy to re-apply too. I tint the lens dark black first, to avoid any paint scratch problems

This thread is kind of old, but good things never go out of style! I have a patient who wants a balance FT28 with solid occluder on the back side. No light transmission. He is using some kind of flesh colored material supplied by an unknown lab or opticial shop. I saw some foils in the catalog, and wonder how they fasten to the lens. Thanks!

If eye doen't need full oclusion, sand the back side of lens with very fine grit paper. If you need full occlusion, black paint until light doesn't pass through. Did you really need to ask someone else for this? If so you must have voted Democrat.

The patient needs (per RX) a beige foil on back side. The only source I find is B & K optical, which has them on back order for 2-3 weeks. Does anyone have other sources? Thanks.

Put the lesn through the generator and first fine (gives you a frosted surface) then drop in the tint tank for 15 - 20 minutes.

Yeah, Yeah - I know its and old thread.

PS - if anyone wants some lens blanks contact me and I will put a grip of true tints through the finer and tint them dark black for you.

What is the normal charge to a patient for an occlusion foil?
