    Attorney/client privilage

The two sides sparred yesterday over the Democrats' plan to request documents covering Roberts's tenure in the administrations of Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush. Former Republican senator Fred D. Thompson (Tenn.), who is shepherding the nomination through the Senate on behalf of the White House, said the administration would oppose such a request, citing attorney-client privilege.

It does not matter who paid the fee.

    It's who he represented.

    Spexvet,

For crying out loud, give it a rest. A Republican was elected President. He gets to pick who sits on the Supreme Court. A Republican majority in the House and Senate will confirm the nomination. The Democratic Party lost, and lost big . . . Get over it. Try to find some real issue to discuss.

    Dick,
This post isn't about the Supreme Court or the nominee - it's about an administration that verges on the clandestine. It is the opposite of open and honest. It witholds information from the American people, then misleads them. Given their history in this type of situation, I would think they'd have learned to be more forthcoming. There I go, again, thinking that this administration could actually learn. DUH!
If, as you say, the nominee WILL be confirmed, then just provide the Senate with the information they requested. What's the harm? Or does the administration have something to hide? Again.

I'd point out that attorney / client priviledge was claimed oh, at least a couple thousand times during the years 1992-2000 (I won't get more specific than that- because everyone cries "foul" when you mention the name).

Unless you honestly believe there is something actually shady to be turned up in these documents (and even the Democrats in the "gang of 14" have stated there is no reason to make this an issue), I think this is an empty complaint.

If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to be ashamed of.

WE all have somethings we do not care to share with the world. Even some innocent things or things that are legal and proper done behind closed doors. Rooms have doors for a reason.

You and I != Supreme Court nominee. Again, if he's got nothing to hide, why hide it?
