    Edge Trivex wet or dry?

Do you edge Trivex lenes wet or dry? Getting mixed answers and results: lab tells me dry but edger really bogs down, gives off profuse smoke & odor, and takes forever to cut. A Buddy told me wet but I get tons of shavings (much like edging Polycarb wet) that clog up edger. Any ideas?

I too have been told "Cut them wet" and "Cut them dry like Poly"

I've edged many hundreds of pairs of Trivex (Phoenix) over the last couple of years, it's a great material but it took some time 'till I worked out the best way (for me) to edge them.

I'm using a Briot Accura and I disconnect the water pump supply.

I have connected to the mains water supply, a garden hose with a pencil jet head and for the first rough cut I direct the water stream towards the back of the lens cutting chamber where the swarf collects, and wash it away constantly moving the jet sideways back and forth above the lens so as little water as possible reaches the wheel.

For the final stage (usually flat edging) I reduce the water pressure as there is far less swarf and towards the end of the cycle, (the last couple of rotations) I make sure the lens and the wheel get wet.

It works, and also the machine stays clean.

Thank you Clive, I will try this as I also run the Briot Accura.

    Trivex Edging

I know most of the edger companies have an edger setting for Trivex. I don't know about Briot. I know that the edgers we use have different setting for poly and Trivex although we have only tested Trivex.

Here is my question. If you cut it dry do you have to polish it (polish it wet)?

See I think the problem with Trivex is its manufacturers are trying to prove how good it is that when you ask them how to do it they tell you "anyway you want."

Should I cut it dry? If you want.

Should I cut it wet? If you want.

How do I groove it? Meh, whatever way.

It is like that all of the time. I understand they are trying to prove it is versatile, but I am just looking for the best way of doing it.

Have not tried to polish or groove...

:( Have tried to edge wet and dry...both have downfalls but for my machine wet works better. I have not tried to polish or groove this material...any input on these procedures?

I edge it wet. My Santinelli has a cycle for polishing and uses a metal polishing wheel, I don't know what its called other than that. The water is on for that cycle to. It does a great job on Trivex. I'm not sure how a metal wheel puts on such a shine, but it does.

    Everyone above,

Did you guys have to change your edger wheels? We are getting ready to process trivex and our corporate office sent me slotted wheels to put on my edgers.

I groove wet. You have to go very slowly around and into. Have to go around like a million times and it really sends a lot of vibrations, but clean when done.

My company sent me "Axiom" wheels " i believe they are called. They are the same as i had before on my edger but they have deep grooves in them. I guess it is too get a better bite. I havent processed any yet but will soon.I was told it was necessary to have these wheels. Maybe thats why so many people are having problems.
