    C/Ls and Epilepsy

We had a Pt come in with a letter from his ophthalmologist.

He has Kerataconus, but the doctor has written "Do Not Give Contact Lenses as this Pt suffers from Epilepsy"

Has anyone ever come across a connection between Epilepsy and C/Ls?

I don't think there is a connection as far as c/l's starting any problems. What I would worry about is the contacts causing problems during a seizure.

Your friend is lucky, I've seen too many problems in the ER to think they are safe

i'm guessing being keratoconic will mean RGPs therfore when the Px has a seizure i guess the uncontrolled eye movements would cause corneal damage?

Some patients can have seizures when you attempt to touch their eye. I had this happen once when I was trial fitting an RGP. This person had a petit mal seizure not a grand mal. It still was scarry though.

Here we have described a real dilemma. A keratoconnus patient can't see without rigid lenses and we are telling him he has to go without seeing for fear of corneal damage if and when he has a seizure.

I suspect that if the keratoconnus was very advanced and the choice left up to the patient, he would have taken his chances on the contacts.
