    Opthalmic and Optical Books

I recently took the ABO Advanced test and the books that were recommended were helpfull but did not have all the information in them that I needed so needless to say I am back to the drawing board and have to take the test over again. If we could make this a thread of books that are related to opticianry or lens fabrication I would appreciate it.

Really, Brooks and Borish's System for Ophthalmic Dispensing, 2nd Ed is really the best book to use for the Master Exam or the optical portion of the Advanced Certification exam.

Fannin and Grosvenor's Clinical Optics, 2nd Ed is also a great text on the subject, but covers ophthalmic optics and lenses with a level of detail that is probably unnecessary for this exam. Mo Jalie's Principles of Ophthalmic Lenses, 4th Ed covers the subject in even more detail, still.

Probably the best book ever written on the subject of ophthalmic optics and lenses is Meredith Morgan's The Optics of Ophthalmic Lenses, which is now out-of-print.

I recently started a similar list of books from my own collection, which you can see at Darryl's Collection.

I only included the Amazon links because the site provides a lot of details for most of the texts. I would definitely recommend supporting your state or national opticianry organizations by buying these products from them if they offer them. I'm not familiar with the NAO's catalog, and I couldn't find System mentioned in the link you provided, but I do know for instance that the OAA at one point sold System under the rebadged title Professional Dispensing for Opticianry, though I don't know whether they still offer it (and I would definitely recommend getting the 2nd Edition).

Go to alibris.com its a used book site and I have purchased most of the optical books that I own there. They are very cheap and they have a huge selection just type in key words like refraction, optics, ophthalmic optics, ophthalmic lenses etc.

Is there a reason why you're not supporting your state or national opticianry organizations by buying these products from them? Just curious, thanks :D

Yes I don't want to go broke. Many of the books on optics are older but the knowledge in them still applies. I can spend $5.00 on a book or $60.00. I buy the older books to suppliment the newer book. Plus many of the older classic type books are no longer in print. But yes I do buy from the NAO and the CLSA but some of the best are at abdo.org.uk. Them Brits got some goooood stuff!

Nice collection Darryl Meister. I'm big on collecting books. I can't tell you the amount of time I while a away at Barnes and Noble. If you are a book freak (like me) there are 4 places that are awesome. The library of Congress, The NY Public Library, The Strand Book Store in Manhatten (biggest used book store on the planet), The Barnes and Noble in lower Manhatten (Its got seven floors!).
