    Angry New oleophobic A/R headaches

Has anyone else had troubles w/oleophobic AR coatings (Alize, RF endura, & Pentax's latest coating) slipping while edging?

I have had no problems w/Alize, I am sure that is due to their blocking coat. However w/Pentax (my primary lens vendor), and RF Endura's newsest coatings even with the blocking sheets thicker lenses have been rotating in their edging cycles.

    Nate,
If you do a search for "ICE" or "Advantage" ,some of the previous threads on edging will come up. Some solutions have been using hairspray on the lens prior to blocking, or using different type of pads or sticker. Lot's of good suggestions.

We let our wholesale lab do these rather than in house. We worry about the bottom line. We do do Endura, and sevral others with no problems. What edger are you using?

Having invented these slickcoats in 1987 and sold the materials to do them in different application methods I can give you a good answer to your question:

1)To prevent slipping you can cut the lenses and send them to your coating lab to have them processed in the vacuum coating machine.

    2) Cut the lenses and apply the coating yourself afterwards in your office through a simple dipping procedure.

    Same materials..........different application...............same results

I have posted in the past that using hair spray would help. After edging many of the new A/R coats, we found it was better NOT using the hairspray but using the pad supplied by Phantom Research (RED PAD) worked best. Always cut lenses large first, check for turning, reblock if necessary. We use Optronics 6E edgers and do not have a problem.

When cutting these lenses it is important not to leave the stickers on more than 15 minutes or else they will lose their adhesiveness. So once you apply the stickers cut the lenses.
