    Confused Consolidation at Luxottica chains

It appears that Luxottica is pruning Pearle stores in the Atlanta area. Is there any indication that this is going on in any other part of the country? We all know the drill, any time one company takes over another they will eliminate any perceived redundancy. The public and the optical industry would have been much better served had Moulin had been successful in it's bid for Cole. How this deal got by FTC intact is a mystery to me. So much for competition being in the public interest.

Why wouldn't a well run company when taking over a poorly run company eliminate parts of it that makes it inefficient?

I figured, us I on the other side are saying its about time. No offense as I cant attest to your particular store but some around home it only makes sence. Look for employment in a nice private practice, you may be pleasantly surprised.

I would never complain about eliminating inefficiency. I just subscribed to theory that competition makes everybody more efficient.

I think your right, I just dont consider Pearle Vision competetion. Again not trying to be offensive, I dont know your skills or your stores capability, I am sorry for your position being eliminated. I hate to hear of the economy going that way, I just can see how Pearles here would be closed.

Not for the company. If stores are taking in net losses overall then the company needs to do something. If a company is now competing against itself instead of the real competition then there is a problem.

Cole was indeed competition to Lenscrafters. At the present time the location that I am at is not being closed. What I was trying to do with my post was to get a feel for what was going on in the rest of the country in regards to Pearle stores and the the rest of the components that Lux got in the buyout of Cole.

Lux buys Pearle and closes stores, as it has a right to, and may make sense to do. Now, customers have fewer options, and can be charged more for glasses, and may have to drive further to get them (indirect cost increase). You also have a pool of unemployed opticians, who may get your job, because they're willing to work for $1.00 an hour less than you.

So, let's see....Lux can charges more for glasses, making more profit, and reduce its payroll in one maneuver.

    Customer loses
    Optician loses
    Luxottica wins

Someone told me that Shoppers Optical in Manitoba pushed as many students through school as possible and paid for it. When the students were licenced Shopper did not hire them. Now they oversaturated the market and dropped the average salary of opticians.

In Ontario we have a lack of opticians, so they are paid a lot higher.

Now that Lux owns Pearle, who is Lenscrafters biggest competitor?

Lux does not see Wal-Mart as a competitor I know for a fact because they allow people to work there and at LC at the same time
