    FT availability?

First off, hello all. Been lurking for a few weeks/months, and I've been picking up quite a bit of interesting stuff.

I have a question today. I've been looking for resources, but I can't seem to find it.

I have a patient that's a rather high myope--OD: -9.00 OS: -10.50 -0.25 who would like a FT28. Ordinarily, I'd just order 1.66 and be done with it, but the labs I work with usually are telling me that 1.66 FTs are on backorder for, well, pretty much infinity. The closest I got to getting a hard date out of them was "....August?" Not really good news.

So, I've heard rumors of a 1.70 or 1.71 FT28 made by Hoya (I think), but I can't seem to find it in the Lenses book or on Eyefinity. Anyone know 1) Whether it exists or not, and 2) Where to find it?

Also FYI, the next best thing the lab(s) offered me was 1.56. Don't really want to go that route if I can avoid it.

    Any help would be...helpful! Thanks!

Try a 1.66. I think sola makes one.

think 1.66is the highest index available, but i think it is a C seg not a D which might explain your labs problem in obtaining it.I checked with my lab
they get semi finished 1.66 sola blanks, surface and coating approx 7/10 days max.

1.66 would be super, but they're both telling me that anything in FT28/1.66 is backordered and not available for months.

Haven't heard of a 1.70/.71 FT, then? That'd be my preference anyway.

How about 1.60? Essilor, Armorlite, and Optima make FT28's in 1.60.

HOYA does not make a lined bifocal in 1.70 EYRY material. If 1.66 is backordered, then you'll have to use poly or 1.60.

It better not take until August! I have a -17.00 and -14.00 1.66 FT28 on order with Soderberg since 03-01. One of the lenses came in two weeks ago, still waiting for the other lens. It's either a FT 1.66 or single vision. Fortunately you have a few choices.

In the -9.00 to -10.00 range I frequently use Aspheric Spectralite ST28 with the +.50 base. Slightly thicker than spherical 1.60 but much lighter in weight with slightly better acuity through the seg.

Hoya's FT28 higher index offering is called Hilux 2 and is 1.56 index, which I believe is not aspheric. The only other choices are all mid-index about 1.56. The Essilor and Signet Armourlite mid-index are aspheric in addition to the Spectralite.

I know it does not apply to this case, but I frequently use Hoya's Phoenix for my higher flat tops, simply because I can apply the Super Hi Vision AR and not have troubles. For some reason Sola, Zeiss, Signet Armolite and Essilor all tell me that they get their 1.56 ft's from X-Cel, and that those lenses already have SRC, so AR coating them is not desirable.

I'd have thought 1.60 would be out there, but they keep suggesting 1.56 as the next best thing. Robert, the Spectralite Aspheric sounds like it could be a winner. I'll see if they can do it.

    Thanks all!

It may be too late but I am almost positive I could have got that lens to you in 5 days. I do believe some ADD powers were on B.O. but not all.

Again, this may be too late but if you are interested in seeing if I can get this lens to you in the next few days, contact Cherry Optical customer service.

Just to let everyone know we did have the lenses Robert was looking for. Interestingly enough when I talked to customer service they wondered what was going on because they filled 4 1.66 D-28 lens orders in the last two days.

    Lenses will be done shortly.

If anyone else is interested in a lab that doesn't have backorders, don't be afraid to call.

Interestingly I ran into this same problem about a year ago with one of my accounts. He was unable to get 1.66 FTs from his lab, but we were able to deliver them in 2 days as a member lab of Global Optics. Seems Global has a good inventory of this product.
