Ian Jordan FBDO CL is clinical director of Orthoscopics Limited. Having initially trained as a dispensing optician specializing in contact lenses he managed the national flagship practice for a large optical chain in the UK before setting up a small successful chain of optometric practices in NE Scotland. Whilst in Scotland he developed an interest in research into the effects of visual stimulus on sensory pathways and was awarded an ABDO education bursary to further this. He subsequently won a number of other awards for R&D including the Grampian innovation award, finalist and also runner up John Logie Baird award for medical innovation and was part of a team that won a government merit award for laser development. He was almost certainly the first person to use contact lenses in experimentally in dyslexia treatment and has become an internationally recognized speaker in visual perceptual anomalies. The research, lecturing and writing became too time consuming and therefore he sold the practices and moved into full time R&D and became an author of 4 books, 2 cd roms, designer of a range of lenses for Hoya, designer of the VTM range of magnifiers for COIL, and became part of the Orthoscopic team which has developed a new range of award winning optometric instruments and tests that is now selling in the UK and Ireland. Ian is also a consultant to a number of international companies. He often is invited to give lecture tours (this year South Africa and Ireland). As a speaker he has been described as “charismatic”.He is currently undertaking a number of clinical trials that relate to optical stimulation and how it affects other sensory pathways. His work has been featured in BBC national news and documentaries, BBC radio and the national press.

Courses
Please note for some courses numbers of people and room specifications can be critical
An introduction to visual perception
2hrs (unlimited numbers) –
basic application of knowledge of anatomical physiological and psychophysical phenomenon in optical practice. If demonstration required add 45 minutes.
How colour affects sensory perception
2 – 5 hours depending on depth.
All senses are affected by color. This course includes a dramatic unique 45 minute demonstration of how colour changes smell, balance, hearing, touch, speech, balance, memory and more using the audience as demonstrators.
I can hear better when I phone with my specs on.
Can dispensing a lens (design or tint) cause improvements / problems to neurological processing? Yes!
- a whole day (interactive lecture followed by a workshop) to find out how. 4 dimensional sequencing and mapping will be explained simply. A complex day of modelling and how it applies to conditions such as convergence insufficiency (immediate cessation / provocation), strabismus, nystagmus, amblyopia, blepharospasm, saccadal and pursuit anomalies. New treatments will be discussed.
Help! My moms head has disappeared! –
sensory integration in practice 1-5hrs. At times funny, at others disturbing, dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD, ADHD, Autism, hearing and balance difficulties will be shown to have a visual component in many cases. Videos of patients will be used to illustrate differing conditions, in longer presentations differentiation methods will be approached.
Colour analysis separating LMS pathways
-2 days (max number 10) –
a hands on experience of separating LMS pathways in the visual system and its effects on lens prescribing. Testing, differentiation, prognosis, prescribing.
Clinical lectures also available with scientific papers on EEGs and visual stimulus, posturography, Vestibular responses, Orthoscopic measurement techniques, Visual praxis, empirical modelling of neural responses to stimulus.
Costs would include travel from UK and accommodation and depend on whether bespoke course is necessary. Specific requirements in room / audience / instrumentation may be necessary. In some cases instruments will need to be brought from UK.
