Google adds satellite images to maps-

Heard about this on NPR today, got the skinny from my sister in law-

\Google quietly updated its Maps service late Monday to include satellite

imagery, a first in the industry. With images provided by DigitalGlobe
and EarthSat, users can now zoom in on homes and businesses across the
United States and Canada, even charting out directions over actual
    streets.

Take a peek, its impressive, much better than MapQuest or Yahoo
    Maps.http://maps.google.com/

    Have fun with it. hj

For my particular area, the detail is not quite as good as Terraserver, but still neat nonetheless.

Yeah, that is cool- I can also see our pool (and our neighbor's ratty pool- thank god for fences).

At work, the image was taken about the time I started at Essilor, because the exit they completed last year is still under construction. Really nifty...

    Thanks for the link, Harry!

    Yup.

Actually, no. Someone offered a similar service a few years ago (simple click from their mapping site), may have been mapblast before MS bought them but I'm not sure, people were up in arms. At least until they realized that the information was available in half a dozen other forms only slightly more difficult to access than the web.

    I think it's pretty neat.

It is and has been for a long time legal for people to overfly your home, for your neighbor's to build observation towers next door, for people to stand on near by highpoints and overview your home. I'm not sure that sat or high altitude photos degrades anyone's privacy in any meaningful way. In what meaningful way do you feel this impinges on your privacy, either in new or existing ways (I'm not baiting here, I'm just curious)?

I guess it's a question of the ease of access and where do you draw the line. For instance, how about a ground level photo of your house? Putting aside this data is not readily available (I think!) , what's the difference? There's so much info out there that is in the public domain, but heretofore was somewhat "private" in that anyone wanting to obtain it had to go thru a lot of digging. I am usually not a "slippery slope" gal but in this case, I guess maybe I am.

What a darling! And that curly hair! My kids tended to be either virtually bald or have pitifully wispy hair at that age. Don't you wish you could freeze them at this age? Hope she has a great birthday (too many presents, she'll enjoy chewing on the boxes and destroying the cake) Enjoy!
