I am in the market for a new edger and am looking at a GerberCoburn Kappa SPX and the Santinelli drilling machine. If you know anything about either of these models I would appreciate your review, expecially about their service.

GerberCoburn Kappa SPX is a great machine. Keep it clean, dirt will kill it Poly slug is the worst. The service depends on what part of the country are in. Getting parts is costly but seldom needed.

Is SPX the one with nex blocker that can change just the B measurement and leave A the same?
Does it work?
i use a topcon and i love it
Can Topcon change individualy just one of the measurements?
how doyou mean? which measurements?
Let say you have a rimless frame with A=50 and B=35mm.
The patient wants a "biggger lens" (it does not fitt his melon head) but he wants it to stay with the same vertical B measurement.
So we need to cut out A=53mm and B to stay at 35mm........
No, I don't think that can be done. It's more like trace the lens and add 1 or 2 mm to the overall size.
Too bad!
I like this feature!!!!!!!!!!
This could make me buy a new one instead of my old Santinelli
Thumbs,
Is the edger for an in office environment or optical lab? How many jobs per day? What materials? Want patternless? My own personal opinion is that the cost of edgers these days is way too high. In my last lab, I had 5 Weco 2440's running Elision Technology Retro's(which make them patternless for those who don't know) and one ET300 dual eye tracer. Ran at least 450 jobs per day with those machines for years and they are still running today. Best thing was that if something broke down, I could have the edgers back to pattern cut in about 5 minutes. To me they are the industry's best kept secret. Those who have them will know what I am talking about. Now the best part, the price. I think and don't quote me, You can get an edger, tracer and retro unit for about $13,000. I am not a salesman for them so I do not keep up on the pricing. If you have any questions, give me a call. I'll give you the details. 1-866-779-5770

The Optronics 4T tracer gives you the option to change the A, B, DBL and C measurements. These features do work.Originally Posted by LENNY
The Optronics 6E edger and 4T tracer are the best edger and tracer.

You can do that sort of thing with Innovations and any edger with which it communicates.Originally Posted by LENNY
even though it may seem ancient, i still love my santinelli edger :)

I wouldn't buy an edger that drills unless I was at a volume of at least 5-7 drills a week that I am already farming out to a lab.

They tried to do it on VEE in but it only changed A and B measurements together! But not separately.
I understand that Essilor France came out with new software/ Blocker that can do it!
Does it work is another queston?????
To ASenior!
I would not pay twice as much for an edger that drills if you do only 5-7 jobs a week.
5-7 jobs a day is another story!
I promise, it can be done exactly as I said - the fact that not everyone in the world (nor, apparently, everyone who works for GC) knows how to do it notwithstanding.Originally Posted by LENNY

7 jobs a week @ $30 charge (on average) to edge and drill and polish blah blah...
That would total out at $10,920.00 a year in savings.
It doesn't take long to add up no matter how you take on the task of doing the drilling your self.
Dont forget how much of your benchpersons time does it take! Do you have a bench person every day doing nothing? Or he does all your jobs in 3 days!?
Santinelli drilling machine costs more than 1/3 higher in price vs Kappa!
My impresion Santinelli is double in price!
It takes very little time to mount a 3 piece. So we are really only talking about the time it takes to drill and or notch. If we have an edger that does the drilling and notching for use "in chamber" then you aren't tieing up that Benchman with additional work except to mount. Going off of our said "5-7 jobs" a week, thats only 1.2 jobs per day. The last practice I managed, I had a digital drill press and I had one of my Optician's time me on the drilling of a Silhouette. From the time I found my datum line, it took me only 44 seconds to complete the drilling (not vertical drilling, drilling to BC) Drill mounts are far from "Rocket Science" and I care to do as much as the work myself as long as it pays for it's self.
Don't get me wrong, Edger's that drill isn't for everybody, Drill Presses can be just as good and surely more affordable.
As far as the cost of a Santinelli being a 1/3 or twice the price of other edges, lets be sure we aren't camparing apples to oranges. Comparing an edger that drills according to the "Angle of BC" and all the other things I have seen it do, to an edger that doesn't IS apples and oranges.
ME1000 with an LT900 about 49k.
Speaking of this... on avarage, what is everyone paying for cut, edge and drill?Originally Posted by ASenior

my brother uses the Kappa and he swears by it.
Thanks for all your replies. I decided to purchase a Kappa SPX from GerberCoburn and a Smartdrill from Smartlab in California. The sales rep was great, even did the installation! He gave me too many referrals to call when I asked him for a list, but I did call about 20 and they where all very happy with the machine and some have had it as long as 4 years. They where all very happy with the service given by the sales rep, especially since they have his cell phone number and he even answers on Saturdays and Sundays. I hope I don't need him to often, but the comfort of knowing that he works this way, really puts my mind at ease.
