Nice post ......................... but you can never have the best product for the cheapest price. You might get the best product at a possible lower or the lowest price.

    Methinks I smell a Rat!!!

    Dear Resident shyamsam77,

When you were choosing your specialty.......why didn't you learn how to spell it? Opthalmology is incorrect, as any dictionary will prove. Ophthalmology is how its done, so the next time you want to pull someone's leg, run it through your spell checker first. It will make you look a little more educated than you are.

If you look at 1-800 contacts, who are the largest and most successful optical product distributer on the web (and probably in the world using the internet), after selling millions of lenses last year at competitive prices that irritated some optical businesses, they still lost about $5 million! And this was supplying diverted product from 3rd world countries bought at bargain basement prices. They are still losing their shirts. I don't believe that the model works, particularly in optical. Even plano sunglasses have a significant risk. Add prescription lenses and it will sink the project.

    1800 contacts lost money?

Did 1800contacts really lose $5 million last year?
I don't see how that is possible with all the money the business they steal from us!!!
Please tell me it is true and not wishful thinking.

If we start judging Optiboard posts on spelling and grammar, I'm afraid we'll have to throw out over 75% of them!

With all due respect RT, I dare say there does not exist any ophthalmology resident who has gone through at least two years of specialized training who does not know how to spell their specialty. They are sticklers for paying attention to details.I have not known one to be that sloppy......but then again I have only been around since the late 50's.

    I'm with the Cap Codger

If this guy is legit he should first consider joining a local Lion's Club and volunteering his skills there. Their network seems to be what he wants to do if I read Sam right, which is to give poor people eyeglasses at a minimal cost. Taking this "Global" is what catches my attention. Ever send eyelasses overseas anyone? Sure they're a "gift"! ;)

While residents are not "overpaid" for the amount of time they put in their residency, they are paid. This resident, if he really wanted to do something meaningful could donate one quarter of his pay to the Lions Club, or Eyes For the Needy,or Cape Cares (medical mission to Honduras) or Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, (for a team going to Thailand) or any number of countless charitable organizations. If he didn't want to do that outside San Francisco, he could donate to "Glide" who provide food and the necessaries of life to the homeless there. He probably could arrange for free treatment of the homeless. Yes, there's a lot he could do to help those in need....short of opening up a web based optical company.

    NEED AN EYE EXAM ?

Now you can call us to schedule a comprehensive contact lens examination through our official national doctor network featuring the independent doctors at Pearle Vision** and Sears.

To set up an appointment, click here or just call us at 1-800-425-2540 to speak with a network service representative who'll find an office near you with convenient hours to fit your schedule. Be sure to ask about special promotions on eyeglasses when you schedule your eye examination through 1-800 CONTACTS

*Exams for toric, bifocal and gas permeable contact lenses are $98.
**Pearle Vision, Inc. does not employ Doctors of Optometry and does not provide eye exams in California.

I was curious as to why shyamsam77 disappeared. We all had our doubts about his project and his background. It seems shyamsam77 has an eyewear/lens company in Taiwan (read through his earlier posts). Perhaps he was not a physician as he claimed, nor based in San Fran.

Anyway, I enjoyed reading this thread.

Syntax, spelling, and grammar gave him away as not being what he said he was.Interesting approach however, and it brought out some stuff worth reading.

Neither one of us was very fast on picking this up, although,in fairness to we sleuths, he didn't give himself away at the beginning!
