    Problems Edging Poly

I have a Santinelli LE-7070 and am getting lots of shavings that stick to the edges of the lens when cutting polycarbonate. Santinelli recommended dressing the wheels, but it occurs during the roughing stage and the manual says to never dress the roughing wheel. The shavings peel off easily, but I don't think this is normal. Any ideas?

How thick of the lenses are you talking about?
    How old are the wheels?

I used that edger for about 5 years. It was always a problem.
I kept a damp cloth nearby at all times.
When I suspected it was going to happen, I would actually spend time watching and wiping the lens as it edged.

This would be why I purchased an optronics 6e...
Hardly have any trouble of anykind - now.

If you are cutting dry, it seems you get a static charge. specially in winter when the air is dry because of heating. Use a good anti static spray like Zero-Fog on the lens before edging, let it dry and then edge the lens. This will disperse the static charge and you might have no more shavings stick to it.

The edger is about 5 years old, but barely used. Less than 5,000 cuts and about 500 of those are poly. This has been happening with all our poly lenses, both plus and minus. I don't think it's just static because I have to physically peel the shavings away from the edge of the lens. I also noticed that it's taking longer and longer to cut the lenses. Sometimes it takes upwards of 5 minutes for the edger to finish one lens!

The cutting wheels are the problem. Either have them retrued or replace them.

Hmmm, doesn't sound good. I guess I'll have to give Santinelli a call on Monday. Does anyone know of any other companies that can do the service or am I stuck with Santinelli?

Your manual is correct, you cannot dress the roughing wheel. If I'm not mistaken, the wheel you are questioning has jagged bumps all over it. Attempting to dress this wheel will only destroy it.

I used a very similar Santinelli for a number of years, and occasionally experienced the same sorts of difficulty. Do you run much CR-39 at all? If so, does the wheel seem to cut better after processing a few CR-39 lenses? Also, you may want to decrease the amount of water (or change the flow pattern of the water) during the roughing cycle.

If all else fails, I found keeping a metal PD ruler handy made short order of the swarf (the name of the clingy translucent white peeling that clings to your lenses). Good luck, and give Santinelli a call- they're usually pretty good at providing technical service.

Well, turns out the back rinse nozzle was spraying up onto the lens, causing it to cool too much. Adjusting the pump to tone down the spray has gotten rid of just about all of the "swarf" (thanks Darryl). And thanks to all for your suggestions.

Hate to rehash an old thread but did you call Sant to readjust the flow rate or is this something that you did on your own? I am having the same issues with my POLY LENSES.
