Are New Jersey Optical Standards Different?

Does New Jersey set tolerances that are tighter than ANSI standards for ophthalmic lenses? I've been told three degrees on a 0.25 cylinder in NJ. Does this sound correct?

I've searched a bit online, but I know someone (or lots of people) will answer this question for me.

    Thanks!

    Brad

I don't know of any different standards here. Certainly not 3 degrees on a quarter cyl. Not even in New Jersey are we that picky. We go by ANSI standards.

Yes, New Jersey standards are tighter, though I think it's 5 degrees on a quarter cyl. I'll see if I can scan my chart and send it to you.

    Hi Brad,

NJ tolerances are different than ANSI on some things, namely cylinder axis.

Three (3) degrees is the maximum for a .12 -.37 cyl.
    Two (2) degrees is the maximum for a .50 - 1.00 cyl.
Any guesses on a cyl over 1.00???

For info, go to http://www.state.nj.us/lps/ca/medical/ophthalmic.htm , scroll down to Statutes and Regulations and follow the link. You will open a .pdf, and the tolerances are spelled out on page 31.

Optowalt, you may want to take a peek at them too since you stated:

We ARE that picky here, and we go by NJ standards in the Garden State. Just curious where you got the mis-information from. We teach students / apprentices from day #1 that NJ tolerances are the ones to use here.

And the ones to insist our labs meet, regardless of their location.
