    1.74

Does anyone know what the hold up is on the 1.74 high index?

I heard that it was because of a lawsuit over patent rights. Wish they would hurry up and get it settled.

Another possibility is impact resistance with thin centers/AR.

I originally heard it was the noxious smell created when surfaced... so the fda wouldnt approve it... not sure if that was true though

Actually, I think For-Life was right when he said ignorance.

Don't know about 174 but both 166 & 167 smell like cureing Epoxy when edged or ground. I suspect they are Epoxy.

    1.74

We've used quite a few pairs over the last year or so, it's available here as a stock finished lens. Very nice, very thin, it stinks when edging and one other point....... I don't see much difference between 1.74 and 1.71
    apart from the cost.

I suppose the answer is to make up 2 lenses with the identical Rx and check them out

The only way to see a marked difference is with really high Rx's. I see people dispensing 1.67 lenses in Rx's under -2.00. I'm thinking that's taking advantage of someones lack of knowledge to make a buck:) . Just a thought.

I have done that only because it was offered to my by my lab as a promotion at half price. Half price of a pair of Panamics 1.67 D Alize is much cheaper than Panamic 1.5 D Alize. It was also nice to give my customer a price break.

From what I have done I cannot see using a 1.74 unless the rx is higher than -11.00 is an average size frame with an average pd.

    Wink

we should start a new thread!!! "name that smell".............i think 1.7 smells like rotten pastrami :bbg: it's fun to watch the outside vendors expressions when they ask "what's that smell?" and with a deadpan look you reply."what smell?" ;)

Supposedly it can't be imported to the US. I've tried getting it through ther Chinese and Koreans and no one will send it to me.

I get e-mail from the Chinese optical manufacturers mostly every week promoting their products, even in small quantities. Will post some of them next I get some.

I've had problems getting the really high index materials in really high Rxs. I recall a -14.00 -4.50 / +2.25 that was unavailable from Hoya in the 1.71 or 1.71 Wide. And forget aphakic lenses. +12.00? Sorry, CR-39 only. +4.00 with 16 prism diopters base out in each eye? Sorry, we need extra thick blanks - made of CR-39, of course! So, when you really, really need a thin lens - forget it!:hammer:
    ...Just ask me...

Nikon stops making their 1.74 after 15 diopters. It is ridiculous, you can bet that they have it available in a -3.00, but not a -16.00 when it is actually needed. I even see companies offer it in a single vision stock form for ranges Plano to -10.00.

I know it is supply and demand, but don't tell me someone is actually buying it in -3.00.

Yep I was stumped as well when I ordered this from Zeiss last week...

    -18.00-1.50X010
    -13.50-1.25X170

and they told me that I couldn't get the 1.74 because it was out of range
    :hammer:

Had to settle for the 1.67 AS.
