I'll show my ignorance and admit I recognized only these two:

    9) Alexander Graham Bell
    10) Wayne Gretzky

I thought Bell was a Scot.

As a Canadian the only one I didn't recognise was the one that was voted "the Greatest Canadian", go figure.

As a side note, my write in vote went to Sue Johanson. I'm sure others will agree that the Sunday Night Sex Show, tv and radio, is hands down the best piece of broadcasting to come out of Canada.

I know 6 of the 10--getting old has some advantages--you remember old stuff, but interestingly not "Tommy Douglas", and did not know Banting was Canadian, I somehow thought he was English, so I guess that's really only 5. (Hey, even that Ken guy finally lost on Jeopardy!!!! Take notice ladies, it was a woman who finally knocked him off!)

I knew them all going into the vote except for Tommy Douglas and though I do agree with some of his theories I did not agree that he should be number one. I was disappointed that Cherry was up there. I like Cherry, but he is in no way the greatest Canadian. My vote when to Pearson, a man whose work is underappreciated.

I never watched an episode of that stupid show. The fact it was on CBC not withstanding.

    The Greatest Canadian?

    How about:

all Canadian military service personnel, past and present. The 'award' would be placed on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

From Wolfe's troops(technically British, but established the current country), to the NWMP involved with the Riel Rebellion to the finest of the World Wars, Korea, VietNam (over 50,000 Canadians joined the US armed services to fight in VietNam), our Cold War vets (all who served through 1989), our Reservists, our Peacekeepers, etc, etc, etc.

I was born and raised in Regina; that's the only reason I know who Tommy Douglas was. But, I agree with For-Life. I think Lester Pearson should have been #1.

This "contest" was based on similar "contests" previously held in Europe. In the Russian and German versions of this program, people were given a pre-concieved list of "greats" to vote on. In the British version, as with the Canadian, people could phone in and nominate anyone they chose. They are planning to do this again in 5 years, and the list will be different I'm sure.

I don't think we were meant to take the results too seriously, it was more an exercise to get people talking, (and watching CBC-now that there's no Hockey Night In Canada:bbg: ).

Many people are surprised/dismayed at the lack of women in the top 100 (there was only 6-and the highest ranked female was Shania Twain! at #19).
(Elizabeth Arden was Canadian and didn't make it on the list).

I knew who Tommy Douglas was. When I was a kid, our neighbours had him over for dinner one night during some campaign trip, and they were the talk of the neighbourhood for weeks afterwards!

I would like to have seen Romeo D'Allaire in the top 10 rather than Don Cherry, but what a conversation piece "Grapes" turned out to be, a usual!

p.s. Loverboy rocks on!! They are still performing believe it or not.......

An American decided to write a book about famous Cathedrals around
the world. For his first chapter he decided to write about
American churches. So he bought a plane ticket and took a trip to
Orlando, thinking that he would work his way across the country
from South to North. On his first day he was inside a church
taking photographs when he noticed a golden telephone mounted on
the wall with a sign that read $10,000.00 per call. The American,
being intrigued, asked a priest who was strolling by what the
telephone was used for? The priest replied that it was a direct
line to Heaven and that for $10,000.00 one could talk to God. The
American thanked the priest and went along his way.

Next stop was in Atlanta, there, at a very large cathedral, he saw
the same golden telephone with the same sign under it. He wondered
if this was the same kind of telephone he saw in Orlando and asked
a nearby nun what its purpose was? She told him that it was a
direct line to Heaven and that for $10,000.00 he could talk to God.

"O.K. , thanks" said the American.

He then traveled to Indianapolis, Washington DC, Philadelphia,
Boston and New-York. In every church he saw the same golden telephone
with the same $10,000.00 per call sign under it.

Upon leaving Vermont, the American saw a sign for CANADA and
decided to see if Canadians had the same golden telephone. He hopped on
a plane and arrived in Vancouver BC and again there was the same golden
telephone, but this time the sign under it read 25 cents per
call. The American was surprised and intrigued so he asked the
priest about the sign, "Father, I've traveled all over America and
I've seen this same golden telephone in many churches. I'm told
that it is a direct line to Heaven, but in every state the price
was $10,000.00 per call. Why is it so cheap here?"

The priest smiled and answered: "You're in Canada now son, it's a
    local call."

A recent report came out stating Vancouver is the best city in the world to live in.

I was just there last weekend, and my opinion hasn't changed- it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there...

    For what it's worth.

    3 & 9.

There is an old joke over here where you challenge someone to name 3 famous Belgians.
    Optical technicians in Britain.
