    Photchromic effectiveness in various materials

I had a patient gripe, gripe, gripe adamantly about her Transition lenses not being as dark outdoors as her old pair were.

New glasses were polycarb with Transitions brown. Old pair were Transitions brown, per patient, but material unknown.

Maybe they were in-mass Rodenstock Colormatic Extra or the "other" in-mass (?) brand, but she said they were Transitions.

Of course I told her she was a nut, "Transitions are Transitions, you wacko", and brushed her off, rudely.

But my conscience got to me, and I called Transitions and talked to a technical guy who told me something to the effect of "Yeah, we've upgraded the technology in a lot of the materials, but we haven't gotten the Transitions Brown in the polycarbonate quite right, yet".

Now I'm wondering: what else don't I know about Transitions?

So, boarders, I humbly ask "what else don't I know?"

Recently I toured the Transistions facility in St. Petersburg, FL and it was quite a place! And personally, i wear a brown transistion in an Image progressive lens design. My lenses are almost 2 years old and still get fairly dark. I think it is the type lens material being used along with other factors that occur in the Transistions facility itself. I was amazed at all the lenses manufacturers send to Transistions to have the technology imbibed into the front surface. Masses and masses of uncuts just waiting to be Transistionalized. I asked alot of questions that went unanswered due to the highly guarded nature of what they do to get the chemicals pounded into the surface of the lens. There were ovens, secret booths, wash baths galore and everything was so sterile, even the pallets were plastic instead of wood to cut down on dust. I think your client probably had an in mass technology which tends to stay darker for a longer period of time. She was just confused. Tough to have patience sometimes with these folks, isn't it? I can say that I've had no problem with my lenses getting dark.
