Being an FDA registered manufacturer exporting and importing into to the USA on a daily basis I have some expierience in this matter.

Optical frames, lenses, contact lenses, other items that will be incorporated onto those items are called devices by the FDA and are under strict regulation.

The can only be imported into the USA by an FDA approved and registered agent. Every time this type merchandise crosses the border special FDA forms have to be submitted and if the items are not registerd as FDA approved the shipment will be blocked.

Optical frames are imported into Canada with different markings requirement than the in the USA and can be recognized instantly as not to be imported into the USA.

Of course you can pick it up yourself by going by car, but US customs these day's are a lot tougher than ever and I would not advise to smuggle any commercial items that fall under FDA regulations.

Also through the North American free trade arrangements you have to declare the country of oriigin and if it is not made 100% in Canada you would have to pay duty on the item based on the customs duties applicable to the country of origin which could make item more expensive than when purchased in the USA.

    Wave

I did actually have friends in the business going to Canada and returning with suitcases full of enzymatic cleaner (which was available there) before it was available in the U.S.

Concidered it myself but couldn't afford the trip and could see headlines saying: "Local optician arrested for smuggling drugs from Canada."
