    Spots on AR

A patient came in with an AR coating that had marks all over it that looked like hazy blotches. Her last AR, a different brand, did the same thing. Both pairs were Progressives. Any clue what might cause this kind of coating problem? Maybe a sprayed solvent?

Easy off oven cleaner will do it in a heartbeat. Suspect it will even eat glass.

Your patient is a repeat offender.

Chip made a good point. AR layers are in the glass family and any solvent or accumulated solvent fumes of glass damaging solvents can or will make marks.

The lenses can be saved by using a good AR stripper and remove the AR coating which then can be used as is or send to a coating company and have them re-coated.

I had a patient who had a pair of comfort transitions crizal, she brought them
back after about 6 months because the lenses were turning pink instead of brown, I could,nt believe it, but fortunately that day we had some sun, and sure
enough the lenses went a bright pink colour.
we sent them back and the lab did a warranty replacement, of course 6 months
later the same thing happened, this time i asked the lady a whole lot more questions, turns out she was using hydrocortisone cream on her face, and this was reacting with the MAR coat, she has had the coating removed,no more problem.

We had a guy with cloudy spots on his ARC lenses twice and he finally figured it out...

Once a week a cleaning lady would come into his house and she sprayed a bleach cleaner in the bathroom right next to his glasses (that were sitting on the sink).
    :drop:
There's always a reason why coatings go bad, it's just trying to get the patient to figure it out!

Ahhh, coincidentally, the patient keeps her glasses in the bathroom when she isn't wearing them.

You know we have been having a lot of problems with A/R coatings for some reason. Many patients are coming back saying they are see spots at the sides of the lenses which is really buging them. I tried doing a face form on one patient and she was ok. However today i had one and i tryed a face form and it did not work. I suggested to strip the coating and reapply however the patient is persistant on having the A/R. what else can be done. And he uses now chemicals just a solution and a cotton cloth.

Neena, since you mentioned the sides, are you sure that they are not just simply seeing the laser engraved markings that all progressives have, BTW, all those markings are 34 mm apart

yes the patient is wearing progressives. However i did check to see if it was the markings and the patient says its nothing like that they are experiencing alot of light from the sides. And patient is not wearing polycarbonate. I have thought about everything but i do not seem to know why they are seeing so much light through the sides.

Are the edges polished? I occasionally see people that are bothered by the light coming through the edges of the lens.

This was a very good and valid point. In the old day's of rimmless glass lenses where we always polished the rims for esthetic reasons we always had the occasional comeback from being disturbed by the reflexes of the edges,

It actually makes sense that you guy's all push AR coated lenses, probably to make a better buck, and then create a reflexion problem which is bigger than the reflexes on a non AR coated lenses.
