What is the correct way to use a handheld digital pupilometer to take a pt's PD? I've been told a few different ways in my time, so I just thought I'd throw it out here. Do you set it to infinity and view both eyes? or one eye at a time? Set it to 40cm or 30? to get a near PD or just subtract 1.5mm from the distance PD? We don't have a user manual where I work now and some opticians are using it differently. Thanks
I've always used it set to infinity and with both eyes. Then, I check using setting for each individual eye.
set to infinity and measure binucularly. unless special case such as alternating phoria may need to do it monocularly.

Set it for what you are fitting for.
PAL: Monocular at ∞
S.V. (anything): Monocular at relative Rx dictated distance.
FT or TRI: Binocular (unless the monocular difference exceeds visual/comfort performance - be sure to explain cosmetic outcome)
Balance: Monocular (at relative Rx dictated distance) 'skewed' to working eye.
