Beer Styles-

I will try to briefly describe some of the most common beer styles and give examples of beers in the style. The information is taken from : Craft Beer Style Guide-Sam Adams
The information is very basic. I was afraid of getting too technical. I can give more detail on any style if you wish.
Ales-

Amber Ale-
Sweet caramel notes and piney aromas blend together to create a smooth hearty beer. Ex.-Sam Adams Boston Ale, Alaskan Amber, Mac & Jack's African Amber, And Red Tail Ale.

Hefeweizen-
Typically light and refreshing with a nice cereal, malty sweetness. Lightly hopped; typically unfiltered. Ex-Sam Adams Summer Ale, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat, Sam Adams Hefeweizen, Pyramid Hefe Weizen, Magic Hat Circus Boy, Harpoon UFO.

Pale Ale-
American Pale Ales are more bitter than their British cousins, but both have terrific balance between malty sweetness and hoppy bitterness. Ex-Sam Adams Pale Ale, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Saranac Pale Ale.

India Pale Ale-
More "hopped-up" than Pale Ale, IPA's tend to be more bitter, and are less balanced. They also tend to be higher in alcohol. Ex-Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA(90 Minute, and 120 Minute as well), Stone IPA, Bell's Two Hearted Ale.

Brown Ale-
Brown Ales are sweet, malty beers with low hop bitterness. You can also taste roasted nutty flavors in these beers. Ex-Sam Adams Brown Ale, Smuttynose Brown Dog Ale, Abita Turbo Dog, Sweetwater Georgia Brown.

Porter-
Porters have a deep roasty flavor to them, and typically have more mouth feel than Stouts. Nicely balanced. Ex-Sam Adams Holiday Porter, Sam Adam Honey Porter, Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter, Deschutes Black Butte Porter.

Stout-
There are a few kinds of Stouts(sweet, dry, oatmeal) and all have deep coffee or chocolate flavors from the roasted malts. Ex-Sam Adams Cream Stout, Rogue Shakespeare Stout Deschutes Obsidian Stout.

If I could add an example to your stout's for the ladies, this year I bought the wife a six pack of Young's Luxury Double Chocolate Stout, at $18.00 a six pack it was definately a Valentines gift worth giving and before they get branded expensive beer they are a traditional pint bottle so it's almost like your getting 8 traditionally bottled beers, still not that great prie wise, but as soon as a women tries it they fal in love. Very subtle choclate flavor with a heavy chocolate after taste, that's why the call it double chocolate.
