 I'm searching for a progressive lens with a +4.00 add. The patient needs the high add to compensate for ARM (AMD) and the optometrist prescribing is keen to keep this gentleman in a prog.

I have contacted all the local lens suppliers in New Zealand Essilor, Zeiss, Rodenstock, Sola, Hoya - to no avail. Is anyone able to help point me towards a supplier who may have this odd lens available?

I'm happy to shop abroad - so lenses from Europe, Australia, USA, Japan - anything!!! HELP!

Cheers,:)

It may be called Summit PRO in other countries like Europe, Japan etc. I believe only in the US is it called Summit ECP

Thanks for this. I've rung Hoya New Zealand and they are checking in Japan. They tell me the Summitt lens is discontinued but are checking to see if they can get blanks from Japan.

Just had a look in our list and have found a couple.
Pentax A-Pro 1.60 Index AR up to 75/80 m/m
Pentax AF 1.67 Index UV AR up to 80 m/m
both special order
Nikon SV Custom R (wide reading) 1.50 Index up to 75 m/m
Nikon SV Excela R (wide reading) 1.60 Index up to 75 m/m

Mind you our list is 4 years old so the products may be discontinued now....

MarySue--Summit Pro (Stickert is correct in calling it this outside the US) is a 1 year old product, so it is definitely NOT discontinued. Sounds like you're having a communication problem with HOYA NZ. There is an older design, sometimes called Summit 13, sometimes called just Summit. Perhaps that explains the confusion, except that I wasn't aware that it was disontinued either.

Thanks to everyone who replied!

I do use the Hoya Summitt Pro lens often and enjoy fitting it - however for some reason, Hoya Summitt - which only has the 4.00 add is only available in Japan, and I wasn't able to source that.

I have sourced a lens from Essilor, and the patient is quite happy. The INDO products aren't available here.

Oh to be as spoiled by choice as you American DO's!

I work in a highly populated practice of ARMD patients. I was suprised to see that the optom suggested a progressive. The optoms I know in the states recommend FT 35/8x35 since the relationship of the progressive power effects width. What is his reasoning. Do you know?

Three reasons only for any pal: Cosmetics, no jump and more money.

We find that many more advanced patients that receive PAL's miss the width; magnification effect simply because their defects are in the direct line of sight. Minkwitz's law is a direct relationship on a corridor of a progressive lens. In our ARMD patients we also watch Base curves, lens thickness & power-hence Magnification effect. We also experience the same with patients who have myopic shift with advancing cataracts. Almost all of our ARMD people are progressive remakes..and or good candidates for multiple sales if you explain their circumstances.

Bev,

In addition to what Chip said the doc might be concerned with the intermediate vision (try cooking or ironing with a 11" reading distance) and with walking/stairs, although a fused trifocal would be a better choice for most.

Nobody is making anything like that, and they know why. It would be the most awful lens ever to hit the market.

t would have a progressive corridor of 4mm and so much distortion on the side that your patient would be motion sick for the rest of his life.

We actually just ordered a pair of blanks from X-Cel Freedom V comes in a 4.00 Add patient was a previous progressive wearer and now dealing with Macular Degeneration therefore the incease in add power. Patient seems to be struggling to wear the lense might be exactly what Chris is talking about.

What about a usable intermediate reading distance?
You dont get that with a bifocal.
Chip, you are just cynical!

I am assuming horizontal.
If it was vertical that would make quite a good short corridor lens. Though im sure it will be necessary before much longer the way frame design seems to be going.
