NEXT GENERATION TRANSITIONS&reg FUELS PHOTOCHROMIC MARKET GROWTH
Conversion of Clear Lens Wearer Provides Opportunity for Growth Even While Overall Volume of Lenses Sold Remains Flat
LAS VEGAS, Sept. 12, 2002 – Next Generation Transitions&reg is providing opportunities for sales growth in the optical industry, even as the overall number of lenses sold remains flat. The number of plastic photochromic lenses sold grew 12 percent June 2002 year-to-date over the same period in 2001, while the number of lenses sold overall declined 1 percent, according to the Vision Council of America’s June 2002 monthly report.

“With fewer lenses being sold, industry professionals are looking toward value-added products to increase their profitability in a relatively flat market,” said Dave Cole, general manager of the Americas for Transitions Optical, Inc. “We believe that the solid growth in the plastic photochromic market is coming from the conversion of the clear lens wearer, and are pleased to have brought this growth to the industry through the introduction of Next Generation Transitions Lenses, which are so clear indoors, they can be offered as a higher-performing alternative to regular, clear lenses.

“This has been a very exciting year for Transitions, and we’re thrilled to report that we’ve been hearing from industry professionals in all areas about the success they’ve had with Next Generation Transitions,” said Cole.

“The successful launch of Next Generation Transitions has contributed to our higher sales volume in an otherwise flat market, and the results have positively impacted our bottom line,” said Mike Daley, president of Essilor Lenses Group, Essilor of America. “Being able to offer this higher-performing product to lens wearers is a leading cause of our great success so far in 2002. It’s a great choice for everyday eyewear. Even I wear them every day.”

“Next Generation Transitions offers improved indoor clarity inside and improved darkness outside, which makes it appealing to a much broader market of wearers,” said Jim Neuman, senior manager, merchandising and manufacturing, ShopKo Stores Inc. “The new lens offers ShopKo and other retailers another option to meet and exceed patient expectations, with resultant benefits including increased patient satisfaction, average sales and profits.”

Next Generation Transitions has had a very positive effect on several labs’ businesses as well. “Given that the overall lens market has been flat or negative, we’ve been extremely pleased that our sales as a company are positive, and I think Next Generation Transitions had a big role in this success,” said Craig Giles, vice president of sales and marketing, Soderberg, Inc. of St. Paul, Minn. ”Next Generation Transitions offers a growth opportunity for labs with a market of consumers that didn’t buy the product previously because they wanted clear indoor performance and dark outdoor performance.”
Michael Gustin, owner of and optician for Webster Eye Care Associates, Webster, N.Y., also attributes Next Generation Transitions with fueling his business’ success over the past year. He now recommends the lenses to almost all patients and reports a quadrupling of Transitions lens sales over the previous year.

“Eyecare professionals can now recommend Transitions Lenses with confidence, even to clear lens wearers who have never tried a photochromic product,” said Gustin. “Next Generation Transitions has opened the door for eyecare professionals to build their businesses by recommending this lens option to all patients.”

“Transitions is pleased to be doing our part by offering a high-value product that opens the door for recommending a higher-performing lens to the clear lens wearer,” said Cole. “We’re proud to be bringing a value-added dispensing strategy to eyecare professionals to help them build their businesses and better serve patients even when the overall volume of lenses sold is flat.”
