I heard that Transitions do not work in cars because of the windshield's UV blockade. Does that hold true for office buildings and resident home windows as well?

Hello dgong,
Most glass used in home and light commercial construction will not block uv rays. You will have some activation and or slowing of fadeback properties depending on how much sunlight is entering the room (area). This applies to nearly all lenses that are photochromic.
Transitions Optical's parent company, PPG Industries, is a major supplier of flat and architectural glass used in construction (along with automotive and aviation glass).
PPG offers several grades of home and commercial glass. The high end products will block uv and infra-red light. These features will protect carpets, furnishings, conserve energy....and keep your photochromic lenses clear.
regards,
Jim
