I hope at least most of the OB members give it a try . I posted the site so everyone could see if they were getting the speed that they are supposed to be getting from their ISP. Also to see how everyone's connection to the OB varies from location or country. Alas the only way to see the results to the latter is through the replies of the members.

what determines this? Most phone company's will not let you surpass the 52 k barrier no matter what kind of dial up modem you have. Also don't forget you are sharing a line that is sending info back and forth to the page that you are trying to view. In short....... even though you have a 56k modem your max connect speed will be less than 52k.

Your modems listed max speed is not a sure fire thing. So having a faster connection today compared to yesterday is normal. Alot of things can slow down your connection though such as site traffic or even the phone company's swiching stations as thay can become bogged down too.

Seriously though, I get better speed at home than at work... something about being closer to a hub or something at home.

Cox Communications (cable provider) suffered some difficulties over the weekend - their network was down Saturday morning, and when it came back up, it seemed sluggish. The speakeasy test reported both ups & downs in the low 200's.

This morning it appears to be back to normal, and the test reports 1447 down and 169 up.

It varies from place to place.But from what i know ......no matter what local you are in the price is very,very steep.Much more than the $45.00 i also pay.Like i said in my last post...im kinda on the fence with this. Love my cable modem....and i do alot of up/down loading.But i do not know how the pricing is going to work out(the service is not in my area yet).I will probably stay with my cable to avoid the "Sticker Shock".

Don't you mean DSL? T1 lines cost on the order of $1000 monthly.

The cost of DSL varies with the speed of service you choose. Unlike cable modems, there are several speeds available; but the one that's competitive price-wise with the cable modem is slower (usually 128K). The DSL guys make the point that DSL bandwidth is constant (that is, if you pay for 128K, you'll always have that much available), whereas the bandwidth on a cable modem is shared with other users on the same segment (whatever that might be), so your speeds vary inversely with the level of usage in your neighborhood.

I started in computer science back when I bought my first Apple II computers. I took courses in Basic, Pascal and File management in college after the Apple II purchase. I think programming is great. My son is a computer wiz. I think computer engineering would be great. I would love to build my own system.

I still have my Apple II and an Apple IIc. I put them away but my son will occasionally get them out and play games on them. I have probably been through 5 IBM type machines including 2 notebooks since 1988. I have replaced a processor and added ram ("the oil change type stuff")and put in new A drives and CD roms. I'd really like to tear one down and 'soup' it up. I guess that will be my next adventure.

I am having serious thoughts about getting adsl here but thats going to be £25.00 to £30.00 a month instead of the £15.00 i pay for 24/7 56k dialup.... but we than have £12.00 a month for the line rental as well...

Actually you don't use a phone line like a DSL modem.It's done with a coaxil cable and as far as i know there is no "upfront" line rental.But they probably get that from me anyway in the monthly fee.

Nothing to shabby about DSL at all in fact when i first decided to dump my 56k modem i went for DSL but it was not in my area.........(it still isn't).Go for it...just think with such a fast connect speed your time on line will be cut by more than 3/4...how's that for persuasion...hint..hint.:cheers:

How is the US for broadband- the UK is a goddam shambles because British Telecom have monopoly on exchange hardware and are charging the earth for third party suppliers to access their network. This is facilitating the biggest technological farce in the history of telecommunications.

10p, I have adsl and only pay £22.50 a month..:bbg: Which is only £7.50 more than i was paying for 56k dialup..I can tell you its well worth the extra....
I get approx 50k downloads and p2p is great i get a cd worth of music in double quick time far better than 56k....

The standard speed in the Uk is 512 down and 256 up on a contention ratio of 50 - 1, which is approx £25.00 a month (Depends on isp) For 512 i pay £22.50 if i wanted a contention ratio of 20 - 1 then it would be £60.00... If i wanted 1024 down its £95.00 and for 2048 its a massive £140.00 a month all are with upload speed of 256.
There are cable providers but i don't know there costs but the fastest speed wise is 1 meg..

Seems that it is done the same way on this side of the pond as well.At least you can select the speed that you want to connect at.I have a cable modem.......and although that's nothing to shake a stick at....everyone shares the same bandwith.....which can really get bogged down during peak usage.As of yet ADSL in not in my area.

Just purchased a Dell Dimension 4400. It has a 1.7 GHZ processor Pentium 4 and 256 M Ram. Connected to Cable it flies. Great machine! First venture into XP. Seems like they are trying to take away our freedom of manipulation.

After some pretty frustrating problems initially, I've managed to get XP Pro running like a gem, for the timebeing.

At least when an app. locks up in XP it lets you sort the program out without resorting to the old shut down > scandisk > 30 more seconds > bored stiff > throw PC out of window > personal injury case against person hit by computer flying out of window > bankruptcy.

I ordered a SB4100 broadband modem (which is like the one road runner furnished) and it will not connect. All the lights are on and it acts like it is hooked up but there is no connection. I called Road Runner tech support and they said that only the equipment they provide was recognizable by their system. Any thoughts? I was going to use it on my old system downstairs I put in the spare bedroom.

:cheers: "Mario Andretti" Jerry Hmmmm....sounds like who ever you were talking to was thumbing through the "Help Me Figure This Out" manual during the conversation.More than likely their service is looking for the correct IP and/or Adapter address to identify the modem and that new "PodRacer" you have :D This is pretty much a standard practice among broadband company's.It helps eliminate subscribers who try to hook up multiple pc's to their one connection.SOooooooo to the best of my knowledge the only way to get around this is to purchase a Cable/DSL Router.You will still use the original modem that came with the service....only you will plug the modem into the router........and then plug the router to your pc.Most routers have a program that will allow you to "clone"(no pun intended)your IP/Adapter address.Sometimes this can also be referred to as a MAC address as well.Also routers will come with a different number of ports.......2,4,6,8 etc.Use this to determine how many pc's you want to connect. Now the bad news....:cry:Not a single one of the broadband companies support or encourage this at all.So you will get no help from them what's so ever.In fact your best off not to call them(that will only tip them off as to what you are trying to do):finger:Hope this helped somewhat or at least pointed you in the right direction.:cheers:

That info will help. The funny thing is that the service techs from Time Warner that installed the initial cable and modem hook up told me I could put as many computers on the system that I wanted. I was only limited to one e-mail address. If I wanted more e-mail addresses it would cost me more. Didn't know I was taking advantage of Time Warner.

I think yahya is on a special offer trial price so to speak... If i wanted a 2 meg adsl connection then i would be looking at £160++ a month even a cable connection of 1 meg is around £50 per month....
Many of our isp's require payment in advance and tie you into 12 contracts..
Could be he's using a connection at collage maybe as well...

Where i am staying, (university halls of residence) i am connected to my university's intranet, and that gives me the unversity's internet connection. That is how i get FAST, an i mean FAST speeds. The £40 is simply a charge they levy to register my ethernet card.

Just got done with installing road runner turbo. In fact that is behind a firewall and a router. I have not had a chance to do a direct connect of the Lan port.Check for decimal points....could it be 1.5 down and 256up?

Jacqui, it's a beautiful thing. Dh and I decided we valued our time and so we pay extra to hop on get what we need then get to the projects rather than sign in to dial up, get in the car, go to the library, check out the info we need, come home, and still be waiting for the home page to load. :D
