Anyone know the principle behind it? From what I remember, its a light source and a magnifier, and a greenish background to amplify the markings somehow.
I haven't personally used one in a few years.
Who all makes one? I heard essilor used to have one with some type of program through labs, but haven't seen many others.
Thanks,

Essilor's is the only one I've seen. The green diffuser really does help with problematic PAL etchings.

The PAL Identifier from Essilor works really well. It magnifies the image and lets you see the markings way better than with the naked eye. The only lens I have much problem seeing through it is a Sola Vip, but they are pretty easy to find just by looking at them from the ceiling lightin overhead. I use mine all of the time for blocking up jobs in the lab after an order comes in with AR applied. I never ever trust the markings put on by any lab. Those markings are almost never right. I also never go through the trouble of putting on all of the ridiculous markings when blocking up a job. Two dots does the job well. All you have to do is to figure out your decentration and center both dots and subtract also for the seg height then block. What you do need to know is what the drop from the pupil mark is on they type of lens you are blocking. Sola VIP is a 2 mm drop, Essilor products and most others are generally a 4 mm drop and Gradal Top is a 6 mm drop, etc.. For some reason the new GT-2 is a 4 mm drop.

The lab I used to be with sold it for a while. Our salesman was really dissapointed when Essilor bought it and he could not sell it any longer.

Leo has one somewhere in his warehouse and when he finds it, it's mine. I have one but the Doctor's office wants one too.

I think you could make one custom designed for your own needs for about $20.
