Well, the final installment is now 5 days away (I'm currently re-reading book 6 to refresh myself on events).

Two questions vex me:
1.) Snape- good guy or bad guy
2.) Dumbledore- really dead or coming back

Vote before Saturday, if you have an opinion...

According to the writer, no one is coming back. Not even Harry Potter, this is his last Harry Potter novel.

I think Snape will turn out to be a good guy. Dumbledore will turn up again, but I don't think he'll necessarily be "alive".

We're lining up at midnight on friday to get two copies. I can't wait and I'm also terrified of what we'll find in it.

I pre-ordered my copy through Barnes & Noble a couple months ago- supposedly it will arrive on Saturday.

I too have some trepidation regarding the contents of the final volume. Rowling has gotten bleaker and bleaker throughout the years- one gets the feeling she might decide to open a slaughterhouse at the end.

I'm hoping Snape is a good guy in the end- and hopefully Harry ends up with some semblance of a family (I like happy endings).

if Harry survives at all.

My hopes:

Ron and Hermione finally get together.
Harry and Ginny finally get together.
Snape turns out to have been really a good guy.
Neville steps into his own.
Wormtail actually ends up being a savior of sorts.

my wife and I have been listening to the audiobooks to prepare. We finished GoF last week, I don't think there is any hope for us to finish in time.

My guess:

-- Snape will be a good guy, but his double-agent status will get him killed by either Voldemort or a death-eater.
-- Dumbledore is really dead, but may have left something that Harry will discover just when he needs it (just like Fawlkes the Phoenix helped Harry out at the end of Book 2). Same for Sirius: he'll have some way of helping Harry.
-- Either Hermione or Ron may meet a sticky end, but Harry will survive, and, in keeping with the prophecy, Voldemort will die. (I can't imagine Rowlings leaving us with the world immersed in hell.)
-- Neville and Luna Lovegood will come into their own and be essential players in the final showdown.

Y'all know that spoilers are putting what they claim to be the chapter names and the basic plot on the internet . . .

I bet Harry ends up a drunken, 30 something, disheveled mess, with delussions of grandeur, dispensing eyewear and wishing he could just dissapear.

Oh My......wait a minute........that sounds like me!

Snape is good. He killed Dumbledore to protect Draco and Snape's role as a double agent. D was never afraid of death and while he won't be "alive" per se, I am sure his picture will reside in the Headmaster's room and will be able to advise from there.

I believe Neville will become a hero. I just hope it isn't at his life's expense.

An interesting theory I read was that Harry has a part of Voldemort's soul in him. The idea is that in order to create a Horcrux, you must committ a terrible act of death.. aka murder. However, the spell for the horcrux itself does not kill.

So say Voldemort who liked to creat the Horcruxes with meaningful deaths, thought the death of the babe that might one day rise to defeat him would be significant. He went to Kill Harry, but in order to create the horcrux, he must split a piece of his soul first and put it into the intended victim. Then when he kills the target, the spell for the horcrux is then activated to create object. But in this case he *misses* cause of Lilly and the charm she places on Harry by her sacrifice protects his soul, leaving it pure.

This would explain why Harry has developed certain talents, such as being a parselmouth that has not been seen in his family before. It also explains the link between the two most noted in the OOP. Also explains why Voldemort is still obsessed with and needs to kill Harry...

I was trying to find the exact link.. but here is one with a similar hypothesis...

NY Times got an "advance" copy and published a review today. No, they don't give away any significant (to me) plot details, but the review is interesting nonetheless:

I am going to be the unpopular one, but I think Harry will die.

I don't want him to, but I think considering the plot, and JK Rowling's insistance that no one else will be able to expand on Harry's story it is not only possible but likely Harry will die.

I think Harry's ultimate sacrifice, that he, like his mother was willing to die to save a loved one.. will be the power that destroys Voldemort. He who must not be named is also he who has never been able to love...

That is the major through plot of all the books. It's always the ability/inability to love.

Well, it took me two days to re-read Book 6- still really peeved about the death of Dumbledore at the end of the book.

Even though I voted he'd be back, it would probably take a ridiculous twist of plot to make it so. So, I guess Albus gets to fade away into hero status.

I'm more convinced than ever that Snape ends up a good guy. I think that's why he gets so angry when Harry calls him a coward- cause he's probably being quite brave to fool Voldemort.

I sincerely wish Rowling considers her original audience in this final book. I know she doesn't want anyone continuing the story, but hopefully she can keep herself from getting too morose with the ending.

An interesting theory I read was that Harry has a part of Voldemort's soul in him. The idea is that in order to create a Horcrux, you must committ a terrible act of death.. aka murder. However, the spell for the horcrux itself does not kill.
That would tie up a lot of loose ends.

I'm so waiting with baited breathe to read the final book - but mine won't be here until around August 1st - I ordered the UK adult edition (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Harry-Potter-Deathly-Hallows-Adult/dp/0747591067/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/202-6171309-0441440?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1185148921&sr=8-2) to match the 1-6 set my wife got me for my birthday.

Would have liked to have read at a more leisurely pace- but I figured anyone reaching the end of the book would want to discuss it with everyone else- so I plowed through (tryed to pace myself through the last 200 pages, however- always tough to say goodbye to characters in which you have invested a lot of reading time).

And so, HP7 goes on top of one of the "finished book" stacks in my closet- there to gather dust.

Wonder what the next big book will be?

While we were in line for the midnight release, my wife and i were discussing how we hope there is another book phenomenon of this scale for our child to know. I want to take my 7 year old to the book store for a late night lineup like that. It was so awesome seeing hundreds of little kids up that late so excited for an 800 page book!
