Progressive Lenses

My wife needs to fill a prescription for progressive lenses and we're a bit confused as to the relative merits of different progressive lens technology.

I've looked on the web to try and try and answer our question but haven't been able to find anything that addresses our question.

Bottom line, is there a difference between a branded lens like Varilux vs an in-house product like Lenscrafter's progressives?
