ODC was formerly Optical Dynamics Corporation. They have a new name now. ODC manufactured(s) and sells a lens casting systems.

1.55 material, cast-in-house, MFH of 18mm. In the US, Wal-Mart optical used them for a while. Stopped using them about 18 months ago. The fitting point is 4mm above the markings.

We used to see tons of those come in here with horrible AR coatings. We always had trouble selling AR to them again because of how oily the AR looked. A quick demo of SHV or Carat Advantage usually does the trick.

The material is too soft (IMO) to have an AR adhere correctly. Add to that the less than premium AR that Wal-Mart WAS using and that is what you were seeing.
The lens is a fine design. I think WM stopped using it just because of the problems that you mentioned. Since they sell everything w/ AR.

The ODC lenses are generally junk considering the mid-index monomer used along with their AR. The PAL design is very good and forgiving as long as the glass molds don't leave scratches and pits in the lens. In fact, we have placed many people in the ODC design and they are happier with it than their past Varilux, Zeiss, Sola, Kodak, Essilor, etc lenses. We use a different monomer than ODC and have the lenses hardcoated thermally with a premium AR. No problems the way we do it. Ours will even pass a drop ball test!

I've made lenses using the Q2100 system from ODC. The progessive design I believe is from Shamir. The optics are good but the monomer is extremely soft after it's been cured. You can scratch the lenses with your finger nail. They need to come up with a monomer that is at least comparible to CR-39 in hardness. The casting for plus lenses are way to thick.

I also believe the PAL design of the ODC lens to be good. We have fit this lens on many replacing a multitude of other designs without a non-adapt. I have sold it to opticians that swear it is the same as the Shamir Genesis.

As far as the monomer, well it is bad. It is too soft and will not hold an AR coat. If the lens first gets a hardcoat (thermally cured) then AR both the durability and adhesion improve. There are other 1.56 index monomers that can be used but they are virtually impossible to get now. I did run across Opticast that has a different monomer and their claims show it to be more durable. I spoke with them and there are people using the Opticast monomer in the ODC system but using a cure oven from Opticast. I spoke with Opticast users that also have a problem with AR adhesion until they use the thermally cured hardcoat first.

You can play around with your gasket sizes to get a thinner lens. Give it a try!!

THat may be true, but we are talking about a lens marking. ODC = Optical Dynamics Corporation. All the other posts are true

ODC Holdings is what the company is called now. I am very familiar with the technology and the PAL designs. The molds were made by Shamir. If anyone would like any more info on the company, designs or technology let me know...
