:confused:I am opening my own Optical Boutique(as a Fl. Licensed Optician)and I will not be accepting insurance. (Out of Network provider )I will however offer to "fill out paper work" so that the client may get some reimbursment, so here lies some questions. Will I need Optical software or can quickbooks handle it if I code my receipts with proper "V" codes? Will I be required to accept Medicare? Do I have to have a NPI # or any other # beside ein# ? Any other advise or questions I have not addressed are welcomed.

You shouldn't be required to accept anything you don't wnat to.

An interesting poll would be:

How many of us started out saying we wouldn't take any insurances?

...except maybe the one that is the largest employer in town?

...and the one the school down the street has?

...and maybe the one that the state employees have?

...and maybe the one that the family with all the kids that wear glasses just signed up with!

Good luck! It can be done, but it won't be easy. I vowed to not take any insurances as well, and I only accept about most of them now.

Welcome on Board!!:cheers::cheers:

You should fill out HCFA forms rather than just giving a reciept with the codes on it. You can even do it by hand if you have neat printing or type it or use a template on your computer. I do this for patient reimbursements all the time and consider it good service to send them in for the patient also.

While you may not "need" optical software, if you have it, you can print out a HCFA with a simple keystroke. It looks much more professional, and the computer will fill it out faster than you can.

Any recommendations on software? I am currently using officemate and I am not crazy about it.

For reimbursement for materials, I don't see why Quickbooks wouldn't work. As long as it allows you to line-itemize the purchase, and the description of the item is in HCPCS and includes the V-code.

You would probably need the patient's name, identification, date, etc.

The problem is that you would have to have a fairly large list of items: sphero-cylinder, sphere, multifocal, etc. Could be very tedious to load, but you can do it.

I would NOT fill out forms manually. Yes, the CMS-100 is the universal insurance form, but a relative pain, and not neccessary IMO to get your customer reimbursement.
