West Virginia has no certification requirements for opticians. Years ago, we formed an association to investigate the possibility of licensure, and had tenative grandfathering in for two surrounding states. Mostly all that came from it was our dues disappearing and nothing accomplished.
I do like the fact that the MDs realize they need familiarization with current lenses and such. Too often we get an Rx from an MD with the note, "Same Base Curve as old" even when they've had cataract surgery and have gone from a +5 to nearly plano.
I'll bet I even know which MD is looking for the optician.
