Removing progressive markings

This may have been posted here at sometime, so forgive me if this is repiticious. But I found an easier way to remove the paint markings on these lenses. Plain old scotch tape. It only works on a lens that has AR on it, but just pressing the tape firmly on the markings peels them off quite well.

We just use Alcohol to remove markings. Tried all the other stuff, proprietary, IPA, etc. One day of of our techs decided to use Alcohol and the markings came right off. Does'nt matter what type of lens. Cr-39, Poly, Trivex etc. Cheap or expensive, Alcohol takes markings off. Any chemical supply place should have it. A quick dip and some tissue used once. For tougher jobs leave the lens in the alcohol for a few seconds.

By alcohol I mean ethanol not methanol.

funny that you say that. I cut a pair of lenses today, and the coating was peeled afterwards.



Anyways, the tape trick works good, but I now use OMS Markaway. I have used alcohol, methol hydrate, and acetone in the past. Those products were too slow and were dangerous to some materials. I tried this stuff out and it is amazing how fast it works. Here is the link:

I've always used "All Off" by Optisource International, it's acetone-free and even works great on A/R and poly... just smells a little strong. Very quick and efficient.

That is actually a proper test to check the adhesion of coating materials. If the coating comes off the adhesion to the base materials has to be improved.

I am not so sure if you will qualify for warranty if you pull off the AR coating.. :hammer:

Why not simply use one of the marking removers that are readily available on the market. Check them out on Google, ask for "lens markings remover"

Hi Chris. We use Crizal almost exclusively. They claim that they (the factory) can't even remove it once applied. I've removed the markings off of about 35 pr. since I 1st posted this, no problems yet. I will report here if I do see any problem with it though. As far as warr. My rep told me Crizal has a "100% patient satisfaction warr." In jest, I asked him what if the patient thinks his lenses have "bad carma". He said they would replace them for "any reason". And no, I haven't tested them on that....yet.:D

I've used non-acetone fingernail polish remover for a long time. I just don't like the smell of it.:)

I've noticed that uncut Crizal Alize lenses dont ever come with PAL markings on them. (I always have to mark them myself) I believe the Crizal lab removes them to finish the AR process... so you shouldnt have to worry about removing the markings on Crizal PALs... :o

I use a red ink, but I think cover the dots with my white out pen.

Frankly, I've never had trouble just using good ol' alcohol. It solves all other problems, right?:cheers:

Uncut Physio 360s always come with markings, Definity with Alize sometimes.

We use pens by "Steadtler" called Lumocolor - 'permanent special F'.

It's like a black felt tip pen, but even though it says permanent it comes right off on AR lenses with a microfiber cloth... on regular lenses u would need marking ink remover to remove it.

Our lab recommended them and sends them to us, it marks nice and dark and easily too.

The old checkwriters, (mechanical type) used a thick oily ink on the inkpads. Ink comes in tubes usually in red or dark blue.

I am using this ink in my lensometer. The pins touch the inkstamp pick uo the ink and deposit it on the lens without drying up and can be removed very easy.

Optisource all-off works great.
Once got a Marker like device at the expo possibly from hilco about 5 years ago. Worked great without the smell. Havent been able to find another one since.

Dynamic labs sells the marking removal pen. But, you're paying a LOT more for the little amount of solvent in that pen. They're about $20 each, I think, and an entire bottle of All-Off is around $40, right?

Use Bounty Towels and lots of denatured alchohol (get a gallon at hardware or paint store). Don't mess around with a little on a kleenex or a Q-Tip. Doesn't hurt to dab some on and wait a few seconds for it to begin disolving the marking ink.
