Consumer considering polarized lenses

Hi, new here. I'm in the market for some prescription sunglasses. Considering either transition or polarized lenes.

Can anyone tell me about the polarized lenses that are common these days? Is the polarization created by a coating? I don't have good luck with coatings as they always seem to degrade to cloudy muck after a few years.
