Identifying types of plastic frames

Is there a way to identify the type of plastic a frame is made out of by seeing it/ handling it? Besides what happens when it gets too close to the salt pan....metals are easier for me to visually tell the differences on.. any ideas of what can make it easier to identify the plastic materials?
