About a year ago I heard that Hoya was working on a new lens material that has the same qualities as Phoenix/Trivex, but will have an index of 1.60. Has anyone else heard or seen anything on this?

Maui Jim's new "Evolution" material is just that. It's 1.60 index, specific gravity is between Trivex and CR39, and the ABBE is something like 48. I peeked at my Maui rep's cheat sheet a few months back and my eyes nearly popped out of my head. They're also promising impact resistance like poly/trivex and have plans (though not a timeline yet) to RX it.

Of course it only comes tinted/polarized, so maybe the reason we're seeing it in suns first is because they're trying to get it whiter.

For those of you that are interested, I also hear that Maui may be going with a company other than Younger for their PALs in the next year or two. And it ain't Hoya.

Dont forget that monomers for optical lenses are available to any lens manufacturers unless there are patents requiring licensing for the use, example Trivex.

ICE-TECH has an excellent new material under final preparation for sale. It is 1.61 index and is excellent for drill mounts. Since we specialize in polarized products we may wait to introduce the clear version of this about the first of the year, when I hope the polarized 1.61 version will be ready to produce.

Send an e-mail to info@ice-tech.com if you want to be sent information on this product when it is ready for release. (We will not be selling semi-finished lenses, all final Rx work will also be completed by ICE-TECH).

Someone call me?

Rumor has it that we'll see a 1.6+ Trivex next year. It will be interesting to see what happens to the 1.53 version if/when 1.6 arrives. I can see the price for 1.53 Trivex dropping a lot and taking a big bite out of the CR-39 market...

Bill,

Like I said before. I wouldn't hold your breath.

Very reliable sources.
