this is the advice one of the big online suppliers is giving potential clients.

Pupil Distance ExplainedPupil distance is the distance (measured in mm) between the pupils of your eyes when looking far away in the distance. When prescription lenses are cut for the frame you have selected, our edging computers are programmed with your pupil distance so that the exact centers of the lenses are directly in front of your pupils. Why is this measurement important?
If the prescription lenses are not set at the same distance as the distance between your eyes, then an unwanted prism is induced which may cause eyestrain. In lower prescriptions, the amount of prism induced will be of no consequence and will not cause eyestrain. For prescriptions over (+) or (-) 2.00, knowing your P.D. is important.http://www.framesdirect.com/common/images/pd.jpgHow do I get my P.D. measured?

Ask your eye doctor to take the measurement at the time of your eye examination.
Call the last place that made your glasses for you and they should be able to tell you what it is.
Go into any Optical facility and ask them to measure it for you. It will take only seconds to do and they shouldn’t charge you for it.Monocular or Binocular?
Pupil distance can be measured in one of two ways. The first is monocular measurement, which will result in values somewhere between 26-36 mm.The second type is a binocular measurement, in which case the number will typically be somewhere between 54-72mm. A binocular measurement is the exact total distance between your eyes, but if your face is not perfectly symmetrical, then this number may not be split equally between both of your eyes. What if my P.D. is written 66/63?
The first number is the P.D. number we require to make your lenses. The second number (63) is the near pupil distance. This number is only needed when reading glasses are required.

It you still have questions or concerns about your P.D. measurement, please call 1-800-248-9427 and one of our highly trained operators will be able to help you. Close Window (http://www.framesdirect.com/common/popup_pd.asp#)

:D
good one !

I also like how they tell people with prescriptions under 2D that the Pd does not matter:

How about this rx RE +0.75/-0.25x180 LE +1.75

ADD +1.50

not uncommon for this sort of thing to crop up.

I had a guy call up last (not our customer) and ask if I could give him a pupil measurement. I said sure "81mm". He said "Hey thanks!" and hung up!

I think we're going to be seeing more of this in the future.

Just two days ago this 'free service' was requested of me. At our dispensary we refuse to become involved, even for payment, in internet dispensary business. I told the guy to find a ruler and do it himself, but not in our office. Had to smile when he said that was rather difficult as he can hardly see well enough in the mirror to shave these days...

State law in Massachusetts is that we (ODs) are supposed to write the PD on any Rx we write,

We haven't had anyone ask us for a PD only for internet specs, but will respond that it was the responsibility of whoever did the exam. We will not do it for free because we will probably get sucked into a later verification process.

I'd offer it in Smoots (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smoot).

From what I understand of CA law, we're not supposed to give it out, it's supposed to be measured by the dispensing optician.

In California, you may include it on the rx. However it is not required.

So the PD on Rx is given by dispensing opticians or ODs?

it is usually measured by the person supplying the spectacles,as well as side length, panto tilt and vertical oc position if aspheric lenses are being supplied.... of course the online people glibly forget to talk of these issues, assuming of course that a nice kind optician is going to sort all this out for free, however as has been said time and time again if you dont value your time and skills then this is the logical consequence.

how much market share do these hucksters have to get before bricks and mortar companies do something about there business model to remove some of the competitive advantages being handed to them on a plate ?

You would need to switch FT bifocal right to left so the lenses would cut out with decentration out!
Dont use stock!
