As a young doctor I used to lecture young presbyopes (38-45 yo) that needing glasses for near (reading or computer) was nothing for them to be upset about nor depressed about . I cognitively knew their reasons for being unhappy but now it is my reality. Even though I have owned a near Rx for 20 years there is a big psychological difference between wearing them for comfort and wearing them because you HAVE to wear them to see. In any case I am happy that my pounding headaches have disappeared and my far vision has started to improve.

Chris, I always knew glasses were a must...FOR OTHER PEOPLE.

Sad to say, old age has definitely caught up with my eyes.

My business partner has a great line:

Looking in the mirror: "When did this happen?"

Classic line, I still crack up thinking about the first time I saw her do that!

Another good perspective. I used to work for an OD who my Dad worked for 20 years prior! Gives you a little idea on his age. I come in one morning and he is staring in the mirror. I ask whats wrong? Response "Bob..I look in this DAMN mirror and see an old man staring back...I'm not an old man! How can you feel so young inside and look so old on the outside." That has stuck with me and I often think of it.

Anyway, good luck Docinchina!

Age gets us all!

"I feel your pain" .... ;)

I have worn glasses fulltime since 2nd grade (high cyl).

A few years back, I went to pop a "tv" dinner into the microwave during my lunch break. I was trying to read the package to see how long to "zap" it for - I couldn't believe how smeary the print on the packaging was! I mean really ... didn't this company have any quality control ... then, my hand moved a little farther back ... {GULP} I exclaimed "Crap (or something of similar meaning ;) ) ACCOMODATION !! "

I struggled and denied it for a few months (asking my coworkers if I needed a flat head or phillips screwdriver on repairs :p ) until one day I'd (they'd) had enough ... I finally "gave in" at 39 - but I love my progressives ...

Your stories are all great to hear but sadly do not make me feel ay better.

Fezz, you reminded me of something that happened to me a few years ago in New York. I was walking by a leath and suede shop and saw a leather aviator jacket. I went in to try in on and the sales girl said it looked great on me. I kept staring in the mirror and said nothing. She asked what was wrong. I told her in my heart I am still 18 yrs old but in the mirror is this old guy staring back at me. Bottom line..I bought the jacket.

Same thing happened to me 6 months ago. I'm 46 and finally realized that I couldn't wear my -1.00 distance glasses and read with them at the same time (I could read when I take them off). After reccomending progressives to about 20,000 patients over the last 14 years I finally had to get my first pair...Definity. I hated them and tried to adapt for over 3 months. I have now given up and am looking at something different.

God does love Opticians, doesn't she? Sooner or later, everyone needs us.

Da bad news is it happened a while ago, you just finally had to admit it. We talk about everyone needing a bifocal at age 40, going through a period of denial of 2-3 years then having to admit it. Appearently us "eye care professionsals are no better than the people we serve.
It's simple a woman 4'10" is going to need bifocals at 38. If she is a little taller she can go a little longer. A man 6'9" may not need bifocals until he is 48 or 52. Are his eyes better than the 4'10" woman's, no his arms are longer.
Don't know why people feels they are aging more slowly than thier peers if they don't wear bifocals whether needed or not. We have all see the patient (usually female) who says: "I don't need bifocals, just a pair for reading and a pair for distance." This actually makes sense to them.

The world won't change no matter how much smarter we think we are than the rest of it.

I must be the odd man out. I'm 36 I had Lasik in april '02 very sucessfully. I wear glasses (plano) every day because my face is the best place to display our best product, and quite frankly I can't wait to find out what all the fuss is about wearing progressives.

Chip,

I'm five ten so if I wasn't going to jump on that first +.75 add I get how long do you figure I could last.
