Cross polarized lenses through one eye should do the trick. I did that for the last total eclipse and it worked fine.

Looking directly at the sun without approved filters can be DANGEROUS. Use ONLY filters that are approved for such use, and read the precautions closely. They are normally available at telescope and specialty photography stores.

I made the basic assumption that the device was going to be hand held, for a quick glance at the sun and surrounding cloud cover. for that purpose "crossed poloroids would be fine.

You have it right. You can super glue them together at crossed axis's and hand hold it. For the purpose it's being used, it will only be for a moment or 2 anyway. You'd never want to put them in a frame (at least I wouldn't) because it wouldn't have any other use.
