View Full Version : Not sure I'm ready for this brand of MNF...

Tony Kornheiser & Joe Theisman... ugh!
Dear ESPN,
Please, please, please change the broadcasting crew for MNF! If you don't, I may have to resort to my father's practice when Howard Cossell manned the MNF mike (i.e., turning off the audio during the broadcast). The crew you currently have is beyond horrible!
For god's sake- give Chris Berman the MNF gig- at least he is entertaining!
Oh, and congratulations on managing to screw up the on-field commentary as well... You've managed to top the endless list of airheads (including Eric Dickerson) that ABC put on the field by sending Suzy Koebler and Michele Tafoya down to the turf. If you absolutely MUST put a female down on the field, track down Leslie Visser (the only on-field female reporter who had a clue over the past 10 years).
My ultimate suggestion? Besides Chris Berman, make a ridiculous offer to Terry Bradshaw and Howie Long and bring them over to ESPN (thinking of Berman trying to mediate between those two on Monday night has me drooling).
Sincerely,
Pete Hanlin
PS- If I see one more "Tony, Tony, Tony" segment on MNF, I will become violent (violently ill, that is).

I'm serious, folks- each passing moment increases my disgust regarding the crew ESPN has decided to put on MNF. This is a freakin' travesty!
The only distinction Joe Theisman brings to MNF is what was perhaps the most grotesque injury ever shown (again and again and again) on live television. Heck, why not just go for broke and bring Gerry Glanville into the booth...
God, make it stop!!! Here's another "Tony, Tony, Tony" segment. Thank god the Colts are only on MNF once this year!
PS- Who is Mike Tirico? I've never heard of him.
PPS- Horrible, simply horrible! Bring two half-drunk fans in off the street and they'll do a better job than this bunch of clowns. Madden must be laughing his socks off watching this collection of rejects try to cover a game.

I was reading today that ABC Sports will no longer be called ABC sports, but ESPN on ABC

A travesty... Oh the horror, the humanity (cf. the crash of the Hindenbergh)! An icon of the sports world has officially passed away tonight- MNF is officially dead!
PS- I know, I know... with everything going on in the Middle East, and world hunger, and people dying in a heat wave in California, it would seem there are more important things to become agitated about. MNF is supposed to be a diversion from all that, however- and in one fail swoop ESPN has finished the destruction of MNF which ABC began years ago.

Hockey Night in Canada is quite enjoyable with the sound muted and the radio broadcast on in for the commentary. As long as you're not watching via satellite (which adds a few seconds delay), you may want to try this approach.

I loved Howard Cosell--the only announcer who really said what he was thinking (including, at times, this is a horrible, boring or badly played game). I don't share your degree of horror with the ESPN gang, but Theismann does get on my nerves. He needs to relax and not be so pendantic.
Oh well, still have CBS for the Sunday games. (We do, right??)

Hey, I like the commentators for HNC. As long as it is the first game.
Have you heard that CTV/TSN want to buy the rights to HNC?

At the risk of shanghai-ing this thread; yes, I had heard that. It's amazing how far the CBC is sliding. Just recently they bumped The National for some american rock reality show that was cancelled after 2 weeks. It will be interesting to see how all that pans out, and if Don Cherry goes along with.

I, too, enjoyed Howard Cosell (sp?) and Don Meredith- in my opinion they were the best team ever on MNF. For some reason, my father simply could not stand Cosell, however...
Since I haven't noticed anyone else expressing extreme levels of angst over last night's broadcast, perhaps I am now the one who has some quirky disdain for Kornheiser and Theisman. Since I don't see myself "getting over it," I guess I'll still have to turn off the sound while watching the games (with Dolby broadcasting, its really too bad you can't just turn off the commentators and listen to the crowd noise... hmm, I wonder- maybe if I disconnected the center speaker).

Mr. Pete..hello from a friend from the not too distant past. I just have one quick question...do you not have anything better to do with your time young man? ;)
Hope all is well with you...if you ever get a chance to send an e-mail, let me know how things are going in the "old neighborhood".
Be Good

Hmmm, a friend from the not too distant past who resides in Chicago... If the city were Indianapolis, I might have a guess- but I'll admit to being (for the moment) stumped.
Actually, now that I think on it, I know a few people in Chicago... Not sure I have any of their email addresses, however.

I was just messing around trying to find a new signature file... You only get 200x100 pixels to work with (which is really quite small). Otherwise, perhaps I could have listed the logos for each individual design (just kidding).

Pete, you have to give MNF a chance. Think of it as new album that needs a few trips around the turntable (dating myself) before it grows on you. Also congrats on becoming the "Pete Rose" of the Optiboard-over 4,000 hits! Keep an eye on Joseph Addai. Go COLTS!!!

Well as long as we're whining: I am not very happy with the Steelers schedule--so many 8PM games. Some of us work for a living!!!!

Well, when you win a Superbowl your going to play a lot of primetime games. The good news, however, is you probably won't have the same problem next year!
:)
Watching the game last night, I found myself already becoming numbed to the inane, vapid blathering of Mr. Kornheiser. If you try really hard, you can actually tune out his voice completely...

Ok, time for me to chime in. As a former Washingtonian and a fan of Tony the "K" I have to say........THIS WAS A REALLY BAD IDEA!
First, Tony is a great sports WRITER! Let me repeat that: Tony is a great sports WRITER! To compare him to Cosell is stupid. Tony has only two things in common with Howard, and a sense of humor is NOT one of them!
Joe T is a idiot! Nothing more needs to be said.
I like the NFL Network's idea of broadcasting games with live sounds and NO announcers! MNF might want to give that a try.

I never considered listening to the TV announcers. Why would I not listen to Sonny and Sam on the radio?

I live in the Dallas area, and the local sports radio jockies were ripping on the MNF crew for about 30 minutes solid. Thankfully, one of them reported a source within ESPN that claimed this crew would not make it to the end of the year...
One can only hope...

Just found out today who would be doing MNF - I only have one comment...at least there's no John Madden, Keith Jackson, Dan Foust, or Gary Danielson in the booth.

It's bbe awhile since I listened to Redskins Radio, but the last time I was in DC, I noticed Frank Hertzog was not on the broadcast. What happened to the old voice of the Redskins?

Some idiot decided we needed a younger voice to appeal to the kids. After all, Sonny and Sam are so very young themselves....

LOL....Sonny was an old man when he played for the Iggles (thats Eagles for you non initiated)
And Sam played when they still worn leather helmets...
Too bad. Frank, Sonny and Sam were a great team.
