View Full Version : What "out of character" music do you like?

Okay, odd question, but do you occasionally hear a song that is sorta out of your "usual" genre- but nevertheless so dang catchy that you catch yourself bouncing around your car to it anyway?
For example, I happened to catch this song called "Do it to it" on the radio a couple weeks ago. Finally had to look the thing up on the internet (its by some group called Cherish). In fact, its streaming off the internet right now!
Anyway, I'm not really into rap or anything, but I likes what I likes, and if you can listen to this song and not get some sort of groove on, I suppose you'd just have to be dead (I like pretty much everything by US3 as well)! Likewise, I HATE country music- but I like one or two artists (e.g., Garth Brooks).
Bounce wit it drop wit it
Lean wit it rock wit it
Snap wit it
All my ladies pop yo backs wit it
Do it do it do it do it
You know the world be rockin' to it to it
So do it do it do it to it
Bounce wit it drop wit it
Lean wit it rock wit it
Snap wit it
All my fellas tip yo hats wit it
Do it do it do it do it
You know the world be rockin' to it to it
So do it do it do it to it

If there are any genre-boundaries to the music to which I listen, they'd be somewhere in the direction of polka. Give me enough beer, however, and...
I don't know if I'm the last person to hear about this trio, or the first, but I hadn't heard of them before this morning. I wasn't quite as blown away as when I first heard, say, Paula Cole, or The Corrs, but I did immediately order CD's.

Oh - I guess I just discovered the answer to your question!

I haven't listened to the entire Wild Bouquet album, but so far, I'm really impressed.

Bluegrass (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluegrass_music) isn't technically country music. Two branches on the same tree, sure, but hardly one in the same.

I have a peculiar weakness for marching band music, Sousa stuff. I know, I know, no accounting for taste.
Polka music reminds me of dancing at weddings where the air conditioning is over taxed and some sweaty, overweight, distant relative decides you must dance with him.....on the plus side, it is the easiest dancing ever--probably the reason for its association with lots of beer.....one two, three four, and one two , three four.....

I liked all the music from "O Brother- Where Art Thou?"
Good to be able to put a label on that type of music!
I immediately bought the soundtrack to "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" after watching the movie. Definitely out of my ususal genre.
Other CDs that are out of character for me:
- Linkin Park's "Meteora"
- a Chris de Burgh compilation
- Aqua's "Aquarium"

Bluegrass is the American cousin of Celtic (Irish/Scottish) traditional music.
I saw a special a couple of years ago where Ricky Scaggs played withe the Chieftans. It was really good!

PBS had an excellent series on this weekend and evidently is one of 2 parts. It is in Applachia and talked about how country music, bluegrass, etc was born. It is quite an eye opener about the area. I loathe almost all country and bluegrass, but it was a very enlightening series and I would recommend that you check it out.

The viewing times are for my local station, but you can check out pbs.org for your viewing times. Johnny Cash was on it and it must have been taped at the latter time of his life. It was very sad to see the shell of the man he became, but his voice was still there.
It was interesting to note also that the first Appalachians were the Cherokee Indians.

I'm fond of so many styles it's hard to pick the "odd one out"
But if I was pressured, I'd have to say.....
old school hiphop.
Though, given my personal demeanor, many are surprised that I'm a grunge fan, being the upbeat optimist that I am.

Well that's the thing about music and all art, taste is so individual and there's no right or wrong. E.g.,Andreas Vollenweider makes me want to poke sticks in my ears.:D On the other hand, if you like--or ever liked--Bob Dylan, pick up his latest "Modern Times". My husband bought it and we listened to it as we took a road trip yesterday. Fabulous.

I've heard the new Dylan is great....also of the new music out there, I have been surprised and impressed by Gnarls Barkley and if you enjoy modern rock at all, you HAVE to listen to Muse, one of the greatest bands out there right now.
Personal all-time favorite bands for myself,
Los Lobos
Chris Isaak
Beatles
Muse
Living Colour

hmmmm....well I have turned into a closet Hip Hop fan....I wish they could make it without cussing so much, the clean versions are not always available on iTunes.
I love Big Band and Swing, makes me wish I knew how to dance like that. I had an old tape with a song called the "Cow Cow Boogie" that was one of my favorites.
P.S. Pete, Lil John rocks!!!!!!

I love Swing. Big Bad Voodoo Daddy is great, saw them at New Year's last year with my fiance and her grandparents.
Also, if you like swing invest the time in hunting down Lee Press-On and the Nails, a great swing band from San Francisco.

I'm a swing band fan as well, but mainly the originals. The new guys are a bit pretentious for my taste.

Well Lee Press-On are pretty out there admittedly. They call themselves "jump swing from hell". It's almost Goth Swing.
Of the originals I love Louis Jordan, Benny Goodman, Count Basie. It's all good.

It sounds like you might appreciate the finer musings of Richard Cheese...have you eveer listened to him?
Beverly Hills, I wonder if my counterpart calls on where you work. I have San Diego, the IE and North LA county and she covers the rest.

Hummm, I am pretty open to all kinds of music but out of character would be Art Tatum, early 1930's stuff.. there are days when it is just perfect!
