Have you thought about fastening some sort of makeshift, heat-resistant thumb handle to the alligator clip, so that the hinge can be released more easily once set?

Actually, I guess it would probably be easier to get one of those large tweezer attachments instead of using an alligator clip.

Actually Jim this was designed for underwater work. I think it would be safe to say that any electronic equipment should be kept away from water. The foot pedal in most of the equipment I have worked with has been wired this way or similar. If water was a concern and you are near a water source than NEC would dictate that you have GFI outlets anyway. Yes it is a rudimetry device but it is no more dangerous than pluging a soldering iron into a extesion cord.
